“…In fact, the crystallochemical formula of ReCOB can be written as (Re x Ca 1− x )(Ca 1− y Re y )Ca 2 O(BO 3 ) 3 where the (Re,Ca) and (Ca,Re) cationic sites are shared by Re 3+ and Ca 2+ with different occupancy factors , e.g ., x = 0.792, y = 0.062 for YCOB , and x = 1, y = 0 for LaCOB ( i.e ., no La 3+ ↔ Ca 2+ mixed occupancy) . Given that La 3+ is absent in the (Ca,Re) sites in LaCOB , an overwhelming majority of La 3+ ions are supposed to enter into the (Re,Ca) sites in Yb:YLaCOB. The random distribution of La 3+ and Y 3+ in the (Re,Ca) sites accounts for the wider FWHM of Yb:YLaCOB (∼4.0 nm) than that of YCOB (2.5 nm).…”

“…Analogous behavior has been encountered in Yb 3þ : GdYCOB [17] and Nd 3þ :GdLuCOB [18]. The broad FWHMs can efficiently accommodate the thermal shift of 3 where the (Re, Ca) (1) and (Ca,Re) (2) cationic sites are shared by Re 3þ and Ca 2þ with different occupancy factors [22], e.g., x ¼ 0.792, y ¼ 0.062 for YCOB [22], and x ¼ 1, y ¼ 0 for LaCOB (i.e., no La 3þ $ Ca 2þ mixed occupancy) [28]. Given that La 3þ is absent in the (Ca,Re) (2) sites in LaCOB [28], an overwhelming majority of La 3þ ions are supposed to enter into the (Re,Ca) (1) sites in Yb:YLaCOB.…”

“…Parameters such as time, temperature or compositions were adapted to synthesize the pure phase. A verification by simultaneous thermal analysis (STA) has shown that 3 wt.% of water was bound to the used B 2 O 3 (Reuther et al, 2011). For compensation the amount of 3 wt.% of B 2 O 3 was added to the mixture to balance the ligated water.…”

“…Ca 4 REEO[BO 3 ] 3 (REECOB) have high potential as optical, non-linear optical and piezoelectric material, especially the latter at high temperatures (Möckel et al, 2013). The structure of most of the REECOB-members is known (Mougel et al, 1998;Reuther et al, 2011;Norrestam et al, 1992;Kuz'micheva et al, 2001). Similar to REECOB EA 3 REE 2 [BO 3 ] 4 (ERB = EA 3 REE 2 [BO 3 ] 4 , EA = alkali earth) are usable for optics (Zhang et al, 2010a;Wang, 2011, 2012) and probably as sensor material, too (Palkina et al, 1972b).…”

“…14,15 The lanthanide calcium oxyborates with general formula Ca 4 LnO(BO 3 ) 3 (Ln = Y, La-Lu) have previously been investigated as nonlinear optic materials. 16,17 The synthesis of these compounds in powder form may be carried out through straightforward solid-state or sol-gel procedures. 18,19 The lanthanide ions in the unit cell are arranged in chains parallel to the c-axis (Fig.…”
