“…In fact, the crystallochemical formula of ReCOB can be written as (Re x Ca 1− x )(Ca 1− y Re y )Ca 2 O(BO 3 ) 3 where the (Re,Ca) and (Ca,Re) cationic sites are shared by Re 3+ and Ca 2+ with different occupancy factors , e.g ., x = 0.792, y = 0.062 for YCOB , and x = 1, y = 0 for LaCOB ( i.e ., no La 3+ ↔ Ca 2+ mixed occupancy) . Given that La 3+ is absent in the (Ca,Re) sites in LaCOB , an overwhelming majority of La 3+ ions are supposed to enter into the (Re,Ca) sites in Yb:YLaCOB. The random distribution of La 3+ and Y 3+ in the (Re,Ca) sites accounts for the wider FWHM of Yb:YLaCOB (∼4.0 nm) than that of YCOB (2.5 nm).…”
