Risk Factors for Preoperative and Postoperative Hearing Loss in Children Undergoing Pressure Equalization Tube Placement

“…The preoperative mean hearing levels for both speech recognition threshold (SRT) and PTA are consistent with a study of infants and children with bilateral OME 12 . The PTA improvement following PET placement (11‐12 dB) is consistent with a systematic review published by the Cochran collaborative, showing an average 12‐dB improvement in hearing 6 months after PET placement 13 . Thus, while our patient demographics were biased toward children with a higher risk profile compared with these studies of typically developing children, we found similar hearing levels due to OME and similar effects of PET placement.…”
