Gorilla adaptations to naturalistic environments

Abstract: In the past few decades there have been increased investigations into the effects of captive environments on behavior. Simultaneously, zoological gardens have undergone a revolution in philosophy and design, resulting in a proliferation of "naturalistic" habitats. Complex environments such as these have been found to affect the behavior of captive animals favorably, including increasing reproductive and rearing success, encouraging the expression of species-typical behavior patterns, and decreasing abnonnal be… Show more

“…There is evidence that animals with longer-duration daily experience in a holding area, a ''night quarters,'' demonstrate a preference for these areas [Stoinski et al, 2001] and that long-term alternations between spaces differ from shorter-term alternations [Videan & Fritz, 2007]. In these cases, apes may demonstrate fewer behavioral changes between enclosures due to subject use of the area moreso as an extension of the home ''territory'' [Forthman et al, 1993;Ogden et al, 1990;Stoinski et al, 2001].…”

“…Certainly, more studies are needed that look at the effects of environmental enrichment on exploratory behavior, general arousal and responsiveness to challenging stimulation [e.g., Ogden et al, 1990;Shepherdson et al, 1993]. Studies of the direct effects of enrichment on sexual activation, sperm quality and quantity, and sensitivity to gonadotropins and other stimulatory hormones would be a worthwhile area of investigation.…”

“…Juvenile-adult dyads were divided into six mother-offspring, and 14 adult female-unrelated juvenile and 2 adult male-juvenile dyads. All observations occurred in the outdoor exhibits (for descriptions see Ogden et al [1990] and Stoinski et al [2001]). …”
