GOLD B-C-D groups or GOLD II-III-IV grades

Abstract: The aim of this article is to investigate which global initiative for chronic obstructive lung disease (GOLD) classification (B-C-D or II-III-IV) better reflects the functionality of patients with moderate to very severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Ninety patients with COPD were classified according to the GOLD B-C-D and II-III-IV classifications. Functionality was assessed by different outcomes: 6-min walk test (6MWT), activities of daily living (ADL) (London Chest ADL Scale), and daily life… Show more

“…Previous research reporting on PA across the different quadrants are mainly based on mMRC to classify patients and only measured PA at one time point. Moreira and colleagues did not find any difference in objectively measured activity time between quadrants B to D nor between the former stages [ 36 ], the latter is in contrast with available literature [ 10 ]. In line with our results, lower levels of PA of patients in quadrant B and D were concluded in the study of Boland,et al [ 37 ], although the methodology of PA measurement was not specified.…”

“…The intransitive frame may be underinformative in at least two ways. First, it is compatible with two different construals, arising from the fact that a DP denoting a plurality occupies the subject position (e.g., Scha, 1981 ; Gillon, 1987 ; Landman, 1989a , b ; Link, 1991 ; Verkuyl and van der Does, 1991 ). Under one interpretation of the conjoined subject, the collective interpretation, the property is predicated of the entire group (or sum) of participants, and there is one single, atomic event to which the verb refers, in which each member of the plurality is a participant.…”

“…Although a cut-off point for the 6MWD has yet to be established in Brazil, previous studies have used a cut-off point of 80% of the predicted value. 17 , 18 A cut-off point expressed as a percentage of the predicted value might be more appropriate for two reasons: 1) it takes into account individual patient characteristics; and 2) it prevents the introduction of an absolute value bias when it is applied to different populations, the 6MWD being longer in Brazil than in other countries. 16 …”
