In this paper, α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles (NPs)-reduced graphene oxide (RGO), α-FeOOH nanorods (NRs)-RGO and porous α-Fe2O3 NRs-RGO could be selectively synthesized by hydrothermal method. The investigations indicated that the obtained α-Fe2O3 NPs, α-FeOOH NRs and porous α-Fe2O3 NRs were either attached on the surface of RGO sheets or coated uniformly by the RGO sheets. And the as-prepared nanohybrids exhibited excellent microwave absorption performance, which was proved to be ascribed to the quarter-wavelength matching model. The optimum reflection loss (RL) values for α-Fe2O3 NPs-RGO, α-FeOOH NRs-RGO and porous α-Fe2O3 NRs-RGO were ca. −32.3, −37.4 and −71.4 dB, respectively. Moreover, compared to the obtained α-Fe2O3 NPs-RGO and α-FeOOH NRs-RGO, the as-prepared porous α-Fe2O3 NRs-RGO nanohybrids exhibited enhanced microwave absorption properties because of their special structure and synergetic effect. The possible enhanced microwave absorption mechanisms were discussed in details. Our results confirmed that the geometrical morphology had a great influence on their microwave absorption properties, which provided a promising approach to exploit high performance microwave absorbing materials.

Easy Synthesis and Characterization of Holmium-Doped SPIONs

The exceptional magnetic properties of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) make them promising materials for biomedical applications like hyperthermia, drug targeting and imaging. Easy preparation of SPIONs with the controllable, well-defined properties is a key factor of their practical application. In this work, we report a simple synthesis of Ho-doped SPIONs by the co-precipitation route, with controlled size, shape and magnetic properties. To investigate the influence of the ions ratio on the nanoparticles’ properties, multiple techniques were used. Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) confirmed the crystallographic structure, indicating formation of an Fe3O4 core doped with holmium. In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the correlation of the crystallites’ shape and size with the experimental conditions, pointing to critical holmium content around 5% for the preparation of uniformly shaped grains, while larger holmium content leads to uniaxial growth with a prism shape. Studies of the magnetic behaviour of nanoparticles show that magnetization varies with changes in the initial Ho3+ ions percentage during precipitation, while below 5% of Ho in doped Fe3O4 is relatively stable and sufficient for biomedicine applications. The characterization of prepared nanoparticles suggests that co-precipitation is a simple and efficient technique for the synthesis of superparamagnetic, Ho-doped SPIONs for hyperthermia application.

Zero-valent iron (ZVI) nanoparticle exists a nanoscale (1-100 nm) of the iron particle with zero oxidation number. It has acquired considerable attention for its potential to capture the free-electron moieties. The production and storage of ZVI material, however, is challenging because it is relatively unstable. In this research, we aim to study of solvent effects on ZVI preparation and its characterization. The nano-scaled ZVI was synthesized by a chemical reduction method. Iron (III) chloride hexahydrate (FeCl3·6H2O) was as a chemical precursor and sodium borohydride solution (NaBH4) as a reducing agent. Two parameters used in this study were: i) solvent types (ethanol, diethyl ether, and acetone) ii) proportion of solvent and deionized water (4:0, 4:1, and 4:2 by volume). We characterized the physical and chemical properties of the synthesized samples (e.g. particle size and distribution, morphology, and the chemical composition) using various techniques, for example, TEM, UV-Vis spectrophotometer, and XRD. Moreover, we performed a thermal oxidation reaction of synthesized powder samples using DSC and TGA tools. The results show that the nZVI particle formed a spherical shape with the smallest particle size of 39 nm. The solvent type was the key parameter protecting the oxidation reaction during the synthesis process. According to the spherical shape of the synthesized nZVI samples, an estimated specific surface area was also reported. The cubic structure of nZVI particles was estimated at 79-81 wt.%, and almost 20 wt.% was attributed to iron oxide (Fe2O3) cubic phase. The oxidation reaction occurred above 400oC. The minimum enthalpy of thermal oxidation was approximately 1600 J/g. Furthermore, the relation between thermal oxidation enthalpy and nZVI particle sizes were revealed and predicted by the Boltzmann equation.
