Glycerol as Suitable Solvent for the Synthesis of Metallic Species and Catalysis

Abstract: This Minireview considers the foremost reported works involving glycerol as a solvent in the synthesis of organometallic complexes and metallic nanoparticles. This analysis highlights their catalytic applications. A special emphasis is devoted to the ability of glycerol to immobilize nanometric species, which, in turn, enables an efficient recycling of the catalytic phase to give metal-free organic products.

“…Metal NPs ranging from one to several hundred nanometers in diameter can be obtained by tuning the molecular cross section of surfactant molecules . The fabricated metal NPs can then be dispersed in various solvents such as glycerol, ethanol, dodecane, acetone, toluene, and butylbenzene to form stable ink (Figure g,h) . The greatest challenge of metal NPs (especially Ag NPs) for flexible electronic applications is their high cost, low solid content, and electromigration behavior.…”

“…Similarly to other polyols (e.g., ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol), glycerol can act as both a solvent and reducing agent of metal precursors, and several applications have been developed in the field of metal-nanoparticle synthesis. Furthermore, glycerol can act as a stabilizer of nanometric species, leading to the straightforward recycling of the catalytic phase (Chahdoura et al, 2014). The conventional and MW-assisted preparation of NPs in glycerol has already been described in the literature and this field of interest is continuously growing (Wang et al, 2018;Ghosh et al, 2019;Parveen et al, 2019;Vinodhini et al, 2019).…”

“…Typically, the Ag NWs are synthetized by the reduction of a silver precursor at elevated temperature with the cooperation of a stabilizing agent; polyol is usually used as both solvent and reductant in the method, silver nitrate (AgNO 3 ) as the silver precursor, and poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) as the stabilizing agent or surfactant. Because of its non-toxicity, high boiling point (290 °C), and low-cost, glycerol is considered as a kind of favorable polyol in the synthetic reaction [12]. …”
