Giardiasis: Characteristics, Pathogenesis and New Insights About Treatment

Abstract: Giardia intestinalis infection causes enterocytes damage and loss of brush border of the epithelial cells of the intestine that leads to shortening of microvilli and altered epithelial barrier function. This pathology results in aqueous diarrhoea, steatorrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting and weight loss. However, most infections are asymptomatic. The main consequence of Giardia colonization is nutrients malabsorption. Several families of drugs with good efficacy are used for Giardia treatment, but sometim… Show more

“…Since 2004, it is listed by the WHO as a neglected disease by the World Health Organization. The prevalence of Giardia infection is higher in developing countries [ 156 , 157 ]. Several remedies of traditional medicine have been administered as a complement to treat this disease [ 158 ], among which is propolis.…”

“…2). Many drugs were used as anti-giardiasis, but with adverse activities (Fallah et al, 2007), due to the development of drugs resistance (Harris et al, 2000;Vivancos et al, 2018). Many studies investigated the invitro antigiardial properties of other commonly used medicinal plants (Anquez-Traxler, 2011;Sadjadi et al, 2006;Saffarharandi et al, 2006;Shahabi et al, 2008).…”
