Geometric Feature-Based Classification of Segmented Human Chromosomes

Abstract: The chromosomes are the carriers of the geometric information, any alteration in the structure or number of these chromosomes is termed as genetic defect. These alterations cause malfunctioning in the proteins and are cause of the various underlying medical conditions that are hard to cure or detect by normal clinical procedures. In order to detect the underlying causes of these defects, the cells of the humans need to be imaged during the mitosis phase of cell division. During this phase, the chromosomes are … Show more

“…Chromosomes are the carriers of human genetic material (DNA), and there are 23 pairs (46 chromosomes) in human somatic cells, 22 pairs of which are autosomes unrelated to sex, and the remaining two (1 pair) are sex chromosomes, of which female sex chromosomes appear in pairs as XX and male as XY [1]. Chromosomal abnormalities include numerical and structural abnormalities; numerical abnormalities are an increase or decrease in the number of chromosomes, which is the main form of chromosomal abnormalities [2], and structural abnormalities are due to the breakage and reunion of chromosome fragments.…”

“…Image segmentation process is useful for feature extraction and pattern recognition (Qureshi & Ahamad, 2018). The segmented chromosome images are used for feature selection in classifying chromosomes (Arora & Dhir, 2020). Many applications have been developed for image segmentation in recent years, but this is a challenging task (Anter et al, 2020).…”
