A sedimentary record collected from beneath the former Larsen-A Ice Shelf reveals the Holocene history of the Larsen-A region. The record begins with the transition from grounded ice to a floating ice shelf, completed by 10.7 ؎ 0.5 ka, and ends with the modern recession. The record contains several late Holocene diatomaceous ooze layers that suggest proximity to productive openwater events. Radiocarbon ages obtained from these sediments were complicated by the presence of detrital and reworked carbon. We have eliminated these complications and constructed a chronology for the Larsen-A Ice Shelf history via tuning of the geomagnetic field paleointensity record with a reference curve. This approach provides chronological control to sediment sequences that lack appropriate material for radiocarbon dating. Geomagnetic paleointensity features with wavelengths of 2-3 k.y. can be recognized and interhemispherically correlated, illustrating the potential to use geomagnetic paleointensity variations as a global correlation and dating tool at sub-Milankovitch time scales.

We propose a simple method to minimize the residual environmental influence which may exist in paleointensity records obtained from sediments. It consists of adding, or subtracting, a fraction of the normalizer (κ, ARM, or IRM) to the normalized intensity record, so that the corrected record exhibits fluctuations uncorrelated with those of the normalizer. This method was tested with paleointensity records obtained from two cores taken at midlatitude in the South Indian Ocean cores, eastward of the Kerguelen plateau. For each core, correction increases the correlation between the three normalized intensity records, NRM/κ, NRM/ARM, and NRM/IRM. It also reduces the coherence between paleointensity records and bulk magnetic parameters used as normalizers. Although it has to be used with caution, this correction may improve paleointensity records by reducing nongeomagnetic influence. It can also be used to detect intervals where paleointensity may be unreliable, i.e., intervals where large differences between uncorrected and corrected records are observed, before and after correction.

Recent progress in paleomagnetic studies of marine sediments has revealed long-term ( -kyr) variations in geomagnetic field intensity (relative paleointensity). The accumulation of relative paleointensity records has enabled the development of a composite geomagnetic-field intensity stack for time intervals spanning the period from the last few tens of thousands of years to the last few millions of years, and has contributed to establishing an age model for marine sediments. This technique is a powerful tool for synchronizing different geological archives, such as marine sediments and ice cores, by comparing the flux of cosmogenic nuclides. This synchronization is essential for understanding the initiation and propagation of changes in the Earth s climate system. However, there is some controversy concerning the limits of the use of relative paleointensity records in dating marine sediments. For example, uncertainty may be introduced into the synchronization by the lock-in of a paleomagnetic signal at some depth below the sediment-water interface in marine sediments through the acquisition of post-depositional remanent magnetization (PDRM). This article summarizes the current understanding of the PDRM process and provides examples of relative paleointensity-assisted correlation or dating in marine sediments. Also discussed are possible sources of uncertainty and future prospects for the technique.
