Two phases of deformation are needed to describe the Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Pahrump and Mesquite basins in the southern Great Basin and eastern Mojave Desert, United States. By interpreting seismic refl ection and gravity observations along with bedrock and surfi cial mapping, we infer an extensional phase of basin formation followed by a transtensional phase, in this area straddling the border of southern Nevada and southeastern California. We reprocessed ~220 line km of industry seismic refl ection data from the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys to emphasize refl ections in the basin fi ll, and combined these results with analysis of gravity data. The seismic lines portray the complex geometry of the Stateline fault system, a major Neogene dextral strike-slip system that passes through these valleys, and provide evidence for multiple ages of faulting along structures that bound the Pahrump basin. Locally thick sequences of preextensional Tertiary sedimentary rocks are cut by large-offset, relatively high-angle normal faults that record a phase of extensional basin formation that preceded transtension. The existence of preextensional basins beneath the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys bears on tectonic reconstruction of the region and suggests that tilted ranges blocks to the west of these valleys need not restore to positions immediately adjacent to the Spring Mountains to the east. Subsequent dextral offset on the Stateline fault system resulted in the formation of steep-sided basins, local arching and tectonic inversion, and the burial of earlier-formed normal faults with coarse clastic detritus. Gravity models that are constrained to match the basin architecture observed in the seismic lines require lateral variations in basin-fi ll and bedrock density, and they confi rm that the Paleozoic outcrop of Black Butte, a topographic high separating the Pahrump and Mesquite Valleys, is unrooted to underlying bedrock.

Rock avalanches are high velocity mass movements of fragmented rock that experience unusually long runouts. Emplacement of rock avalanches have been studied for over a century, yielding many explanations for their enhanced mobility. Whereas most of these hypotheses address intrinsic mechanisms, few have addressed the influence of runout path substrate material. This study investigates the role of a rigid bedrock substrate in the emplacement of the Blue Diamond landslide deposit. To better understand the role of the runout path material, facies analyses were conducted at exposed remnants of the landslide breccia. Observed sedimentary fabrics and internal morphologies were identified and mapped following standard facies models for largerock avalanche deposits. The presence of basal fabrics and morphologies rules out a frictionless emplacement because they represent prolonged interactions at the rock avalanche-substrate interface. This suggests that the rock avalanche endured significant basal shear resistance during motion; however, conservative H/L estimates indicate a low to moderate basal resistance was experienced. Aided by outcrop mapping, clast count data from 120 stations across the deposit shed light on intrinsic mechanisms that occurred in the slide mass. Correlations between matrix and carbonate count frequencies show that areas with more matrix experience substantial amounts of fragmentation and comminution. It is likely that basal shear stresses were transmitted upward through the rock mass during emplacement which is seen in the vertical transition from matrixiii rich to matrix-poor breccia facies. Observations of proportional breakage and enhanced mobility may best be explained by the process of dynamic fragmentation. Uncertainties surrounding the originally interpreted genesis and distribution of the landslide deposit led to an alternate emplacement hypothesis. I propose that the landslide breccia was derived from slightly north of the previously suggested source area and slid into the Blue Diamond Hill site where it was deposited onto Moenkopi Formation. Afterword and over some time, the underlying Moenkopi Formation experienced gravity gliding as it slid from the Blue Diamond Hill site to its current position in the Blue Diamond area, taking the landslide breccia with it. However, more field observations are needed to validate this secondary emplacement hypothesis. iv

Tectonic Analysis of the Pennsylvanian Ely‐Bird Spring Basin: Late Paleozoic Tectonism on the Southwestern Laurentia Margin and the Distal Limit of the Ancestral Rocky Mountains

During Pennsylvanian to Early Permian time, much of southwestern Laurentia experienced broad deformation far from the nearest plate boundaries. The bulk of this deformation is known as the Ancestral Rocky Mountains orogeny, which consists of several basement uplifts and proximal basins north and northwest of the Ouachita‐Marathon suture. The Ely‐Bird Spring basin formed during this time, located between the classic Ancestral Rocky Mountains and the complex and poorly constrained western Laurentian margin. In this study, we used tectonic subsidence curve analyses to evaluate the tectonic style of basin subsidence in this basin and several northern Ancestral Rocky Mountains basins. The Ely‐Bird Spring and Wood River basins have convex upward and stair‐stepped tectonic subsidence curves similar to curves from migrating foreland basins. These curves, combined with sedimentological and structural data, are consistent with these basins forming due to loading from the west and northwest as part of the complex western Laurentian plate boundary, not due to classic Ancestral Rocky Mountains tectonics. The other northern Ancestral Rocky Mountains basins have much steeper and more linear subsidence curves, similar to foreland basins with fixed loads. However, the Oquirrh basin, in particular, displays a large amount of subsidence far from hypothesized tectonic drivers of deformation. A combination of transmitted stress from both the western Laurentia margin and traditional Ancestral Rocky Mountains tectonism explains the anomalously large subsidence in the Oquirrh basin. Therefore, transmitted stresses from more than one side of western and southern Laurentia are required to explain the observed pattern of deformation.
