The abandoned gypsum quarry at Dingwall, in Canada, is a unique place with a peculiar “living” landscape created by expansive hydration of anhydrite process actively operating in the weathering zone at the quarry bottom. It causes a rapid volume increase of the rocks and the formation of the unique domed and tepee-like hydration landforms (several meters in length and up to 2.09 m high) with internal hydration caves (swelling caves, German: Quellungshöhlen). The quarry also shows some rare evaporite minerals, sulphate karst, spheroidal weathering of anhydrite and the other phenomena. Several steps of geoconservation strategy are described to promote Dingwall quarry as a geosite and a geodiversity site: inventory, quantitative assessment, conservation, interpretation, promotion and monitoring. The performed inventory describes the elements of the geoheritage. The quantitative assessment of the site, made according to the method by Brilha (Geoheritage 8:119–134, 2016), was based on the four aspects: scientific value, potential educational use, potential tourist use and the rate of destruction. For showing the geological heritage, the plan of the site was prepared, with paths for visitors, attendant infrastructure, thematic interpretation panels and plates with QR codes. As a part of the promotion, application of the Internet with already operating sites (e.g. hydrationcave.com) is proposed. In turn, monitoring, with measurements of benchmarks and photographic and photogrammetric documentation, will ensure the proper functioning of the site after establishing it as a geosite and a geodiversity site.

Geotourism is one of the fastest growing tourism branches. Geoparks feature prominently in geotourism as well as geoeducation. Well-designed geotrails link local geology, geoheritage and geoeducation. Unfortunately many trails do not consider or insufficiently acknowledge recent didactic and touristic findings. As a result, they fail to interest a lay audience in geological phenomena, convey relevant information, and attract tourists to the region. A catalogue of state-of-the-art criteria for the evaluation of existing geotrails based on a case study of the UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb (Germany) was elaborated by a comprehensive literature research and subsequently verified on the basis of selected model trails. Finally, recommendations for model geotrails were derived. The term “model” refers in this case to aspects of geoeducation as well as geotourism. Results showed considerable enhancements, but also the further necessity of improvements such as a stronger consideration of Education for sustainable Development (ESD), a better integration of the criteria of geo-interpretation as well as the opportunities and potentials offered by the to-date too scarcely used new technologies. Our surveys in the UGGp Swabian Alb largely coincide with the results of national and international research. Often it is merely small factors that differentiate an adequate and a model geotrail. Our checklist of criteria offers a good basis for these factors.

Geoheritage and Resilience of Dallol and the Northern Danakil Depression in Ethiopia

The Danakil Depression, located in the northern segment of the Afar rift, is a world-class example of active rifting and the birth of a new ocean. The unique, yet only partially interpreted geothermal system of Dallol in northern Danakil is currently receiving renewed attention by researchers and visitors despite its extreme climate since the recent improvements of infrastructure and the stabilisation of Ethio-Eritrean political relations. Previous studies focused on the general geological description, the economic exploitation of potash reserves and interpretation of the complex hydrothermal processes. Continuing monitoring of geothermal activity has not yet been carried out, and the valorisation of local geoheritage has not accompanied the increased interest of tourists. Here, we present a three-step study in order to demonstrate the unique geological environment and international geoheritage significance of Dallol and Danakil. A three-year-long remote sensing campaign has been done to provide information on improving the resilience of visitors through interpreted, monthly hazard maps, and on following up the changes of geothermal activity. Over the same time, the first geoheritage assessment of the region for 13 geosites was carried out along with a comparative analysis of three quantitative methods (to evaluate the scientific importance and the geotouristic development potential of the area). Finally, with the input of the assessment, a preliminary geoheritage management plan was created for practical consideration by stakeholders toward a geoconservation and geotourism development, as well as a resilience system of this peculiar area.
