Abstract:We study the reconstructability of (d + 2)-dimensional bulk spacetime from (d+1)-dimensional boundary data, particularly concentrating on backgrounds which break (d+1)-dimensional Lorentz invariance. For a large class of such spacetimes, there exist null geodesics which do not reach the boundary. Therefore classically one might guess some information is trapped in the bulk and thus invisible at the boundary. We show that this classical intuition correctly predicts the quantum situation: whenever there are null geodesics which do not reach the boundary, there are also "trapped scalar modes" whose boundary imprint is exponentially suppressed. We use these modes to show that no smearing function exists for pure Lifshitz spacetime, nor for any flow which includes a Lifshitz region. Indeed, for any (planar) spacetime which breaks (d + 1)-dimensional Lorentz invariance at any radius, we show that local boundary data cannot reconstruct complete local bulk data.

We construct a holographic dual to the three-dimensional ABJM Chern-Simons matter theory with unquenched massive flavors. The flavor degrees of freedom are introduced by means of D6-branes extended along the gauge theory directions and delocalized in the internal space. To find the solution we have to solve the supergravity equations of motion with the source terms introduced by the D6-branes. The background we get is a running solution representing the renormalization group flow between two fixed points, at the IR and the UV, in both of which the geometry is of the form AdS 4 × M 6 , where M 6 is a six-dimensional compact manifold. Along the flow, N = 1 supersymmetry is preserved and the flavor group is Abelian. The flow is generated by changing the quark mass m q . When m q → ∞ we recover the original unflavored ABJM solution, while for m q → 0 our solution becomes asymptotically equivalent to the one found recently for massless smeared flavors. We show that scalar perturbations of the eternal, rotating BTZ black hole should lead to an instability of the inner (Cauchy) horizon, preserving strong cosmic censorship. Because of backscattering from the geometry, plane wave modes have a divergent stress tensor at the event horizon, but suitable wavepackets avoid this difficulty, and are dominated at late times by quasinormal behavior. The wavepackets have cuts in the complexified coordinate plane that are controlled by requirements of continuity, single-valuedness and positive energy. Due to a focusing effect, regular wavepackets nevertheless have a divergent stress-energy at the inner horizon, signaling an instability. This instability, which is localized behind the event horizon, is detected holographically as a breakdown in the semiclassical computation of dual CFT expectation values in which the analytic behavior of wavepackets in the complexified coordinate plane plays an integral role.
