Genomic characterization of a bovine viral diarrhea virus subtype 1i in Brazil

Abstract: Bovine viral diarrhea virus 1 (BVDV-1) belongs to the genus Pestivirus within the family Flaviviridae. Based on the 5' untranslated region (UTR) sequence, BVDV-1 can be divided into at least 17 subtypes (1a though 1q). BVDV-1i is an uncommon subtype that has been reported in the United Kingdom and Uruguay. Here, we report the complete genome sequence of the first subtype 1i BVDV-1 (strain ACM/BR/2016) isolated from cattle in southern Brazil. The genome is 12,231 nt in length and contains a single ORF that enco… Show more

“…BVDV-1a (cases 1, 5, and 6) and BVDV-2b (cases 3 and 4) were identified in heifers/steers in our work, indicating that both species are related to postnatal morbidity and mortality in cattle in Uruguay. In other South American countries, clinical disease has been reported for BVDV-1a, BVDV-1b, BVDV-2a, and BVDV-2b in Argentina [44][45][46]; BVDV-1b, BVDV-1d, BVDV-1i, and BVDV-2b in Brazil [47][48][49][50]; and BVDV-1a, BVDV-1b, and BVDV-1c in Chile and Peru [17,51]. Although cattle exposed to BVDV in utero constitute a significant portion of clinical presentations, cases of transient/acute postnatal infection may be significant sources of direct losses [1].…”

“…In addition to D32/00_'HoBi' (Schirrmeier et al, 2004), at least four full genomic sequences of pestiviruses isolated in Brazil have been published: three HoBiPeV and one BVDV-1i. Mósena et al (2017aMósena et al ( , 2017b performed a full genomic sequencing and characterization of a BVDV-1i isolated from cattle in RS state. BVDV-1i is an uncommon subgenotype and has been detected in few regions (Yeşilbağ et al, 2017).…”
