Abstract: Understanding the genetics of colonizing populations has been, and continues to remain, an important focus in evolutionary biology. Different theoretical models predict varying levels of genetic variation in colonizing populations depending upon strength of founder effect, gene flow and rate of population growth and immigration following colonization. We analyse overall genetic variation using amplified fragment length polymorphism markers in colonizing populations of Hypochaeris tenuifolia (Asteraceae) in the… Show more

“…Moreover, genetic diversity was not correlated with population size. Newly founded populations often exhibit lower levels of diversity compared to long-term established populations (Slatkin 1977;Muluvi et al 1999;Amsellem et al 2000), although higher or similar levels of variability in founder populations have already been reported (Krü ger et al 2002;Tremetsberger et al 2003). Furthermore, large populations often exhibit stronger variability than small populations, which is then illustrated by a significant correlation between genetic diversity and population size.…”

“…Especially the number of colonisation events, founder effects and bottlenecks, which occur during colonization have a large impact on the genetic structure (Austerlitz et al 1997;Friar et al 2001;Tremetsberger et al 2003). In general, both gene diversity and heterozygosity within populations are known to be lowered (Parisod et al 2005) by bottlenecks and founder effects.…”

“…Molecular markers have been shown to be valuable tools to analyze migration and founder events (Barrett and Shore 1989;McCauley et al 1995;Tremetsberger et al 2003;Pleines and Blattner 2008). Information on migration routes as well as on potential source populations, and the amount of genetic diversity occurring in a certain landscape are of great value to analyze gene flow, dispersal and colonization, and to develop conservation strategies (Durka et al 2005).…”
