Abstract: The genetic analysis of Brachyplatystoma platynemum individuals sampled from the lower Madeira River reinforces the existence of two structured populations in the Amazon Basin (Madeira and Amazon populations). However, the recapture of an individual from the Amazon population in the Solimões River, which was telemetry‐tagged in the Madeira River after the damming, indicates that fish from the Amazon population move between the two river systems. This has not yet been observed, however, in the Madeira River pop… Show more

“…The reasons for the lack of predam studies include the limited time between licensing and dam construction and operation, the technical complexity of studies, and difficulties experienced in regions with poor infrastructure such as the Amazon basin (Hahn, 2012;Hahn et al, 2015). At best, studies assessing the migration patterns of fish affected by hydropower projects are initiated during dam construction (Hahn et al, 2019a;Hahn et al, 2019b), at a stage when the hydrological dynamics have already been significantly altered, affecting the migratory behaviour of the species.…”

“…The second approach for evaluating fish passage effectiveness consists of tracking fish movements both upstream and downstream of the dam (Antonio et al, 2007;Silva, 2012;Fries et al, 2019;Hahn et al, 2019a;Hahn et al, 2019b). In this case, translocated individuals are identifiable by some type of tag and tracked along the river.…”
