Background and aims Miscanthus is a genus of perennial C 4 grasses native to East Asia. It includes the emerging ligno-cellulosic biomass crop M. Âgiganteus, a hybrid between M. sinensis and M. sacchariflorus. Biomass yield and cold tolerance are of particular interest in Miscanthus, given that this crop is more temperate adapted than its C 4 relatives maize, sorghum and sugarcane.Methods A plant exploration was conducted in eastern Russia, at the northern extreme of the native range for Miscanthus, with collections including 174 clonal germplasm accessions (160 M. sacchariflorus and 14 M. sinensis) from 47 sites. Accessions were genotyped by restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (RAD-seq) and plastid microsatellites.Key Results Miscanthus sinensis was found in maritime climates near Vladivostok (43Á6 N) and on southern Sakhalin Island (46Á6 N). Miscanthus sacchariflorus was found inland at latitudes as high as 49Á3 N, where M. sinensis was absent. Most M. sacchariflorus accessions were diploid, but approx. 2 % were tetraploids. Molecular markers revealed little population structure (Jost's D < 0Á007 among diploid groups) but high genetic diversity (expected heterozygosity ¼ 0Á14) within the collection of Russian M. sacchariflorus. Genome-wide association (GWA) analysis for traits measured at the collection sites revealed three M. sacchariflorus single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) significantly associated with the number of stems per unit area, one with height and one with basal stem diameter; three were near or within previously described sorghum quantitative trait loci for related traits.Conclusions This new Miscanthus germplasm collection from eastern Russia will be useful for breeding Miscanthus and sugarcane cultivars with improved adaptation to cold. Moreover, a strategy is proposed to facilitate the rapid utilization of new germplasm collections: by implementing low-cost SNP genotyping to conduct GWA studies of phenotypic data obtained at collection sites, plant breeders can be provided with actionable information on which accessions have desirable traits and alleles.

We performed reciprocal transplant experiments in Miyazaki, Kyoto, and Akita to differentiate the effects of environmental factors and genetic variations on biomass production and heading time in common (C‐) and early flowering (E‐) types of Imperata cylindrica. In our experiments, we used 10 and 11 accessions of the C‐ and E‐types, respectively, collected across the distribution range of the two types in Japan. Three ramets for each accession were potted in each of the experimental fields and cultivated from June 2016 through November 2017. All accessions were grouped based on their origins: low‐latitude group (LG), mid‐latitude group (MG), and high‐latitude group (HG). The biomasses of the C‐types in the MG were heavier than those of the C‐types in the LG and HG in all experimental fields. E‐type accessions with origins close to the respective experimental fields tended to have higher biomasses than accessions collected further away. C‐type plants grew more vigorously than E‐type plants in Miyazaki and Kyoto, but biomass growth was similar between the types in Akita. Thus, we did not detect clear local adaptation measured as biomass production in the C‐type. However, each accession of the E‐type appeared to be locally adapted. The competitive abilities of the C‐ and E‐type accessions from Tohoku were similar. The flowering periods of the two types did not overlap in any of the experimental fields. Hence, although wild crosses between the two types occur in Tohoku, between‐type hybridization was improbable under the conditions of our common garden experiment.

Anthoxanthum aristatum Boiss. is native to southern and western Europe and North Africa. In Central Europe this species is recognized as invasive. Its ability to colonize various habitats may result from a high level of polymorphic isozyme loci and high morphological variability. The aim of this study was to recognize the degree of genetic diversity of the studied invasive species at its non-native range limit using molecular markers. The examined plant material consisted of 70 samples collected from 7 populations originating from various habitats: arable fields, recently abandoned field and sandy grassland. Ninety-six the Directed Amplification of Minisatellite-region DNA loci and 82 Sequence-Related Amplified Polymorphism loci were detected. The genetic diversity at the species level was high. The majority of genetic variation was present within populations (68% and 66%), while the remaining molecular variation was distributed among populations within and among habitat types. Specimens originating from sandy grassland populations were grouped together in one cluster that was genetically distinct from the arable field and fallow populations. The high genetic diversity populations at the A. aristatum non-native range limit in Central Europe and their marked diversity in arable field and sandy grassland habitats suggest that this species may systematically cross both geographical and ecological barriers.
