Genetic diversity of native populations of Croton tetradenius Baill. using ISSR markers

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Brazil has about 300 Croton species in different types of vegetation. Croton tetradenius Baill., which is endemic to the Northeast region and predominant in the Caatinga vegetation, stands out among the several species of this genus. Considering the importance of knowing the genetic variability of a species, the objective of this study was to analyze the genetic diversity of the genotypes of natural populations of C. tetradenius in the State of Sergipe, using ISSR molecular markers. Forty individuals… Show more

“…These results reinforce the potential of RGA markers to access genetic polymorphism. The polymorphism results obtained with the use of ISSR primers in C. linearifolius were similar to the results presented for other species of the genus Croton, such as Croton tetradenius (94.8%) (Almeida-Pereira et al, 2017) and Croton heliotropiifolius (94%) (Rocha et al, 2016).…”

“…The Shannon index varies from 0 to 1; the closer to zero, the lower the diversity (da . The values found in this study (I = 0.334) are lower than those obtained for C. tetradenius in the Caatinga vegetation (I = 0.450), northeast region of Brazil (Almeida-Pereira et al 2017).…”

“…Overexploitation can erode the genetic diversity of some species, promoting loss of genetic variants and endangering several of them even before they are known (Souza 2015). In this sense, germplasm characterization is important to subsidize the use of natural resources, as it allows new materials of interest to be included in genetic improvement programs and serves as a basis for the design of conservation strategies (Souza 2015;Almeida-Pereira et al 2017). Different methods are used to characterize genetic resources; among them are evaluations of morphological, chemical and molecular characteristics.…”

“…Genetic analysis using genetic markers in plant have shown the occurrence of very high genetic diversity, especially with in populations, whereas low differentiation has been observed among populations [20]. Genetic variation and genetic relationships were efficiently determined using the ISSR markers.…”
