Abstract:In cotton breeding programs, it is necessary to identify genotypes with predictable behavior on the length of fibers, and which are responsive to environmental variations, in specific or broad conditions. The aim of this study was to employ the methodology of mixed models for simultaneous selection of cotton genotypes with greater length of fibers, adaptability and stability. It was evaluated 36 lines in three trials located in Apodi (2013and 2014) and Santa Helena (2013 CNPA 2012-55, CNPA 2012-58, CNPA 2012-62 and CNPA 2012 can be grown in all tested environments, since they gather greater length of fibers, stability and adaptability. in a randomized block design with two replications. | Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) is a significant global crop and a vital raw material for industries. Studying existing cotton germplasm is crucial for discovering new genetic resources for future breeding. In this study, the effectiveness of EST-SSRs and ISSRs markers were compared for assessing genetic variation among 45 Pakistani Bt and non-Bt cotton varieties. ISSR and EST-SSR primers yielded 108 and 28 loci, respectively. The polymorphism was found 32.40% for ISSR, while 89.28% was recorded for SSR primers. Cluster analysis revealed a high level of genetic similarity for ISSR (average 0.92) and EST-SSR (average 0.85) among cotton genotypes. The mean polymorphic information content (PIC) value was 0.25 for ISSR, whereas it was recorded 0.48 for EST-SSRs. Confusion probability (Cj) exhibited a negative association with discriminating power (Dj), while Dj displayed a positive association with PIC. Marker discriminating statistics showed that EST-SSRs have a high expected heterozygosity of polymorphic loci (Hep) as compared to ISSR, along with a higher marker index value (MI). The effective multiplex ratio for ISSRs (1.40) was greater than EST-SSRs (1.12). The structural analysis revealed 6 sub-clusters for EST-SSRs and 4 sub-clusters for ISSRs. This phylogenetic study is crucial for identifying promising genotypes for breeding programs, especially given the limited genetic diversity in cotton breeding. The study showed that Bt cotton genotypes share a high genetic similarity, emphasizing the need for introducing diverse or exotic genotypes into breeding programs to enrich genetic diversity. Additionally, marker-discriminating indices can aid in selecting effective markers to assess genetic variation, facilitating the development of improved cotton varieties with desired traits.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the qualitative parameters and nutritional potential of silage of arboreal cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) shoots. The experiment was carried out in a 4×2 factorial arrangement, for two silage forms (in natura or pre-dried), with four treatments, as follows: without additives (WA); with inoculant (WI); with 2% ground corn (GC); and with 2% ground corn with inoculant (GC+I). The fermentative quality and nutritional parameters of the silages were evaluated. Fermentative quality was better in the WI and GC+I silages. The dry matter content was higher in the pre-dried silage, while the crude protein contents of in natura silage were higher in the WA and WI treatments. The lowest values of neutral detergent fiber and acid-digested lignin were observed in the WI treatment, for pre-dried silage. Total digestible nutrients and total volume of gas were higher in the pre-dried silage, in the WI and GC treatments, respectively. In vitro dry matter digestibility was lower in WA silage, in both forms. Silage of arboreal cotton associated with inoculant or with inoculant with ground corn shows a better fermentation profile and improves the energy and nutritional values, both in natura and pre-dried forms; however, in natura silage is less laborious for rural producers.
