Abstract: The Guzerat breed is well adapted to the tropical conditions of Brazil. After 1940, the widespread use of Guzerat cattle for crossing has reduced its population size. In 1994, a selection program for milk production traits was initiated in some purebred herds. However, its success is compromised by genetic drift and an increased inbreeding coefficient (F). The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic status of the Guzerat population under selection for milk production in order to monitor genetic var… Show more

“…Because the animals of the present study probably descended from those studied by Bozzi et al (2006), this estimate is indeed expected to be reduced in Brazil. Similar results have been reported by Gutiér-rez et al (2003), Faria et al (2009), andPeixoto et al (2010) for different cattle breeds.…”

“…This breed is considered rustic, and is widely used in strategic crossings with the aim of producing animals adapted to climatic conditions. In Brazil, Guzerá breeding program objectives are focused on dual-purpose selection (Peixoto et al, 2010); however, the breed is characterized by a high frequency of short lactations, and since it is not a specific dairy breed, by less persistent lactation curves. In view of the above considerations, the objective of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for milk yield in Guzerá cows using RRMs.…”

“…This breed stands out among Zebu ones for its high rusticity and potential for double aptitude (meat and milk), which makes it an important livestock resource in tropical areas (Peixoto et al, 2010).…”
