Quartzitic mountain reliefs developed in a tropical savanna climate tend to have shallow sedimentary deposits. This is due to low level weathering processes of quartzite rocks and formation of colluvium ramps on the slopes. This study aims to determine the characteristics of colluvial materials, particularly grain size, and to analyze sediment chronology above the saprolite, seeking to identify accumulation rates and make correlations with the dynamics of the recent geomorphological evolution of the Canastra range in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Samples collected in different morphological positions were submitted to granulometric analysis and dated by Optically Stimulated Luminescence Single Aliquote Regeneration (OSL/SAR) and radiocarbon dating. Grain size analysis showed a predominance of sandy and gravel materials and demonstrated that the colluvial ramps in the study area contain materials derived from the decomposition of quartzite rocks, accumulated in shallow and sandy profiles. LOE/SAR dating indicated ages between the end of the Pleistocene, not exceeding 30,500 +/- 4,950 BP, to 500 years BP, whereas the 14C dating showed ages between 4460 +/- 30 BP and 1140 +/- 30 BP. These data indicate that the deposits from the study area are relatively recent, which demonstrate that variations in the weathering process and deposit formation have undergone recent changes, probably due to climatic fluctuations and changes in the regional hydrological regime. Quaternary formations mapping in the region of Volta Grande do Rio Uruguai (Brazil)

Quaternary formations (detrital and weathered materials) are an important natural resource for different areas of scientific investigation, from understanding their relation to erosive processes and morphodynamic processes that create landforms or to understanding the history of the first human settlements (geoarcheology). Quaternary coverings can be formed in situ or be transported by external geologic agents. Regarding soils, Quaternary formations are related to landscape topography and are transformed according to the characteristics of this topography. Hence, classifying and mapping these soils is not always easy. The present article aims to map the Quaternary formations along a stretch of the Uruguay River basin known as Volta Grande (SC/RS-Brazil), by using topographic attributes derived from the SRTM GL1-Up Sampled digital elevation model, soil particle-size analysis, and a generated Multiresolution Index of Valley Bottom Flatness (MRVBF) index . The results of the analysis show that: (i) colluvium is the predominant Quaternary formation in the study area; (ii) there is a predominance of clay, corroborating previous studies of the region; (iii) the spatial distribution of the study area’s Quaternary formations reflect local slope dynamics based on morphology and topographic position; and, (iv) the existence of colluvium-alluvium on the Uruguay River’s banks indicates that slope attributes contributed to the pedogeomorphological dynamics of the study area and not only fluvial dynamics. Based on the results, the methodology applied in this study might be useful for pedogeomorphological studies, notably in the analysis and mapping of Quaternary formations, despite some of its limitations.

O artigo aborda as diferenças nas formas de relevo e materiais associados (rochas, solos e depósitos) do setor noroeste do estado do Paraná, região sul do Brasil. Discute, em nível de detalhe, a geometria de uma vertente e as especificidades granulométricas e morfológicas das areias de um solo sobre o arenito da Formação Caiuá (Grupo Bauru), em comparação com outro nos basaltos da Formação Serra Geral (Grupo São Bento), na bacia hidrográfica do Córrego Gurupá. Para tanto, foram realizados procedimentos em gabinete, campo e laboratório, ligados a metodologias e técnicas da Pedologia, Sedimentologia e Geomorfologia em uma sequência multiescalar, que subsidiaram a descrição e análise das formas e materiais. Conclui que há claras diferenças morfológicas entre grãos de areia dos dois perfis, porém na mineralogia e granulometria as distinções são sutis. O Argissolo, sobre o arenito, possui grãos de quartzo preferencialmente rugosos, polidos/foscos e arredondamento subangular/subarredondado dependendo da profundidade, enquanto o Nitossolo, oriundo dos basaltos, contém grãos rugosos, foscos e subarredondados em sua maioria. Estes resultados corroboram com a hipótese de que a Formação Caiuá possui duas fácies, uma de deposição eólica e outra flúvio-lacustre, contrariando a ideia que propõe um contexto exclusivamente eólico. Além disto, as características encontradas no volume superficial, comum aos dois solos, não possui continuidade em profundidade no Nitossolo, o que indica uma gênese alóctone deste material sobre o basalto.
