Generation and characterization of the highest laser intensities (10^22 W/cm^2)

Abstract: We generated a record peak intensity of 0.7 x 10(22) W/cm2 by focusing a 45-TW laser beam with an f/0.6 off-axis paraboloid. The aberrations of the paraboloid and the low-energy reference laser beam were measured and corrected, and a focal spot size of 0.8 microm was achieved. It is shown that the peak intensity can be increased to 1.0 x 10(22) W/cm2 by correction of the wave front of a 45-TW beam relative to the reference beam. The phase and amplitude measurement provides for an efficient full characterizatio… Show more

“…In several theoretical papers pair production in the standing wave formed by two counterpropagating laser beams has been considered [2]. In most cases a laser field strength of order or above the critical value E c = 1.3 × 10 16 V/cm is required in order to observe the process in experiment [3], which still is by four orders of magnitude larger than the highest laser field strengths achievable today [4]. More promising in view of its experimental realization is pair production in the combination of a laser and a Coulomb field.…”

“…A record intensity of 7 × 10 21 W/cm 2 has already been obtained in lab-oratory by focusing a 45-TW Ti:Sa laser beam onto one wavelength [4]. Numerous Petawatt laser systems in principle capable of reaching an intensity of about 10 23 W/cm 2 , are under construction in different laboratories [28].…”
