Generalized malignant acanthosis nigricans

Abstract: We report a case of generalized malignant acanthosis nigricans (AN) secondary to metastasizing squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix uteri. The disease initially manifested in the perineum as condyloma acuminatum-like lesions. Subsequently, most of the cutaneous surface and the mucosa of the vulva, mouth, tongue, and the palpebral conjunctiva became involved. The association of AN with a squamous cell carcinoma is rare, and conjunctival involvement is unusual.

“…On the eyelids, lips, and vulva, extensive papillomatous lesions may be evident. [9][10][11][12] Presence of acanthosis nigricans may indicate a hidden cause. Darier fi rst suggested a relationship between acanthosis nigricans and internal malignancy, and Curth classifi ed acanthosis nigricans as benign, malignant, syndromic, or pseudo-acanthosis nigricans.…”

However, characteristic cutaneous changes such as hyperpigmentation, intense skin markings, and thickening of the skin mark the presence of acanthosis nigricans, in addition to other features.…”

“…Breast, lung, liver, colon, renal, ovarian, and uterine carcinoma were also identified. [37][38][39][40][41] It commonly regresses with tumor resection but can recur with metastatic disease. This type usually has a sudden onset with rapid progression and mostly develops in middle-aged to older patients.…”
