Inmate-level factors such as gang affiliation (DeLisi et al, 2013), general or violent criminal history (DeLisi et al, 2011), or personality and mental health problems (Archambault et al, 2013) could conceivably be related to both childhood abuse and disciplinary measures in prison, and could in fact explain why inmates with antecedents of maltreatment are at risk of experiencing punishment.
