Gelatin-Modified Biomimetic Apatite Coatings

Abstract: Biomimetic coatings constituted of gelatin and nanocrystalline apatite were deposited on titanium substrates from a slightly supersaturated calcium phosphate (CaP) solution enriched with different amounts of gelatin. Although the biopolymer inhibits the crystallization of the inorganic phase, as shown by the reduction of the mean dimensions of the spherical aggregates and of the degree of crystallinity of the apatitic phase on increasing gelatin concentration, the deposition of a uniform layer of nanocrystalli… Show more

“…Bentgrass plugs were harvested as described above and treated with TurfScreen or PAR solutions mixed with fluorescein‐isothiocyanate (FITC, Sigma‐Aldrich, St. Louis, MO) at a final concentration of 2 mg mL –1 . The FITC is a small fluorescent tracer molecule commonly used in confocal imaging for the visualization of coatings (Pierce et al, 2009; Bracci et al, 2012), as well as bacteria and small proteins to study their localization relative to plant stomata (Melotto et al, 2006). Once thoroughly mixed with FITC, each solution was applied as a thin layer to multiple leaf blades on separate pots using a small paintbrush.…”

“…The form of the multiplet at~33 2q could be explained by the presence of gelatin, which decreases the crystallinity of hydroxyapatite [30,31].…”
