Gebco Gridded Bathymetric Datasets for Mapping Japan Trench Geomorphology by Means of GMT Scripting Toolset

Abstract: The study investigated geomorphology of the Japan Trench located east of Japan, Pacific Ocean. A high-resolution GEBCO Gridded Bathymetric Dataset was used for modeling, mapping and visualization. The study aimed to compare and analyse variations in the geomorphic structures of the two parts of the trench and to visualize variations in the geological, geophysical and bathymetric settings. Technically, the cartographic work was performed using scripting based on the Generic Mapping Toolset (GMT). Model… Show more

“…The approach of GMT is based on a modular cartographic approach with special parameters defined and used for plotting each cartographic element, which makes it easy to add new layers on the raster map (Lemenkova 2020c). Compared to the mainstream GIS approaches based on graphic user interface (GUI) or other approaches in Earth science (e.g.…”

“…The proposed methodology of R and GMT based cartographic scripting demonstrated application of machine learning in visualization of geospatial data derived as open datasets. The topographic map (Figure 1) has been plotted using GMT cartographic scripting toolset (Wessel & Smith, 1995) which is used in some papers focused on geophysical, geological and geomorphological research (Gauger et al 2007;Lemenkova, 2020aLemenkova, , 2020b. The plotting was based on using the sequence of codes calling various modules of GMT for mapping cartographic elements.…”

“…Methods and tools for geomatic data analysis in geologic studies are diverse. Most of the GIS examples present methods of cartographic data visualization, cross-sectioning, plotting lithological stratigraphic columns, mapping, widely used in Earth sciences (Suetova et al 2005), but others include statistical analysis, 3D modeling, environmental assessment (Lemenkova, 2020a;Klaučo et al 2013Klaučo et al , 2017, plotting ternary diagrams for petrochemical rock characteristics (Fanti et al 2018;Lemenkova, 2019Lemenkova, , 2020b, remote sensing based data capture and analysis. In contrast to these and other existing GIS-based geological studies, this research presents an innovative methodology of the geophysical mapping of Mongolia performed using the combination of the three cartographic approaches: scripting cartographic techniques by the Generic Mapping Tools (GMT), traditional GUI based cartographic visualization by the QGIS, and utilizing R programming language.…”
