Gastroprotective Effect ofCochinchina momordicaSeed Extract in Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug-Induced Acute Gastric Damage in a Rat Model

Abstract: Background/AimsThe major compounds of Cochinchina momordica seed extract (SK-MS10) include momordica saponins. We report that the gastroprotective effect of SK-MS10 in an ethanol-induced gastric damage rat model is mediated by suppressing proinflammatory cytokines and downregulating cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2), 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), and the activation of calcitonin gene-related peptide. In this study, we evaluated the gastroprotective effects of SK-MS10 in the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAI… Show more

“…The comparison was done with reference standard drug omeprazole and the ulcer model after treatment with both active fractions and omeprazole showed dramatic gastric mucosal damage conservation. This study also supports previously done experimental studies [46,[84][85][86][87][88][89][90][91][92][93].…”

“…A variety of plant-derived flavonoids and their derivates have been demonstrated to have the gastroprotective effects. 19 21 Garlic ( Allium sativum ) has long been used as a common dietary supplement and traditional medicine. Garlic constituents has been reported to have multiple biological function including antioxidant activity, antithrombotic activity, lowering blood lipid, cardiovascular effects, improvement of immune function, and anticancer effect.…”

“…Gastric pain, mucosal erosion/ulceration and blood loss are produced by most NSAIDs to varying extent; relative gastric toxicity is the major consideration (4,6,17,33) . Inhibition of synthesis of gastroprotective prostaglandins (PGE 2 , PGI 2 ) is clearly involved, though local action induction back diffusion of H + ions in gastric mucous is also playing a role (1) .…”
