“…The HI searches for galaxies in the optical Zone of Avoidance carried out by, among others, Henning et al (1998) in the north, and by Henning et al (2000) and Juraszek (2000) in the south, were confined to |b| < 5…”

“…Overall, the Milky Way remains optically opaque for extinction levels above A B ∼ > 5. m 0. This intransparent part of the ZOA regions is currently being filled in through the systematic blind H I searches the Dwingeloo Obscured Galaxy Survey (DOGS) in the north (Henning et al 1998; In the surrounding area the Lauberts galaxies are displayed (large dots, D ≥ 1. 0).…”

“…This sample was updated by Huchtmeier & Richter (1988, 1989 and Karachentsev (1994) to reach 215 galaxies. Over the last years the nearby galaxy census was increased by H i line surveys of the Milky Way (Henning et al 1998), as well as a "blind" H i -survey of the southern sky with the Australian multibeam radio telescope (Kilborn et al 1999;Banks et al 1999). In addition to these activities 94 galaxies from the Karachentsev catalog were found to be within a distance of 10 Mpc, increasing the LV sample to a total of 387 galaxies.…”
