Fusion probabilities in the reactions40,48Ca+238U at energies around the Coulomb barrier

Abstract: Fission cross sections and fission fragment mass distributions were measured in the reactions of 40 Ca + 238 U and 48 Ca + 238 U at energies around the Coulomb barrier. Fusion probabilities were calculated based on the fluctuation dissipation model. The measured mass distributions for both reactions showed an asymmetric shape at low incident energies, whereas the distribution changed to a flat shape at higher energies. The variation of the mass distribution is explained by a change of the ratio between fusion … Show more

“…The quasi-fission contact times are also long enough to enable the conversion of the initial relative kinetic energy in to internal excitations. Experimentally, the measured total kinetic energy (TKE) of the quasi-fission fragments in 40,48 Ca+ 238 U reactions is in relatively good agreement with the Viola systematics [12,18]. The TDHF approach contains one-body dissipation mechanisms which are dominant at near-barrier energy.…”

“…Many experimental studies have been performed to understand the mechanisms at play in the quasi-fission process since its discovery [11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Various theoretical models [20][21][22] have also been developed to help in the interpretation of these experimental data.…”

“…This behavior indicates the effect of the quantum shells of 208 Pb. We note that influence of quantum shells in QF processes has been routinely observed experimentally [66][67][68][69][70][71][72] and discussed theoretically [10, 12, 28-30, 57, 73-76].…”

“…Layers of 232 Th, 238 U, 244 Pu, and 248 Cm, 180-220 μg/cm 2 thick, deposited on a 40-50 μg/cm 2 carbon backing, were used as targets. The 248 Cm target (125 μg/cm 2 ) was sputtered on 27 Al backing (20 μg/cm 2 ) and covered on both sides by carbon 12 C (40 μg/cm 2 ). The enrichment was 99.99%.…”
