Further molecular characterization of weed-associated begomoviruses in Brazil with an emphasis on Sida spp

Abstract: -Begomoviruses are whitefly-transmitted, single-stranded DNA viruses that are often associated with weed plants. The aim of this study was to further characterize the diversity of begomoviruses infecting weeds (mostly Sida spp.) in Brazil. Total DNA was extracted from weed samples collected in Viçosa (Minas Gerais state) and in some municipalities of Alagoas state in 2009 and 2010. Viral genomes were amplified by RCA, cloned and sequenced. A total of 26 DNA-A clones were obtained. Sequence analysis indicated t… Show more

“…Non-cultivated species of the families Asteraceae, Caparaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Fabaceae, Labiatae, Malvaceae, Solanaceae and Sterculiaceae have been reported as hosts of many begomoviruses in Brazil and in several other countries in the Americas (Frischmuth et al, 1997;Roye et al, 1997;Faria and Maxwell, 1999;Fernandes et al, 1999;Idris et al, 2003;Jovel et al, 2004;Assunção et al, 2006;Amarakoon et al, 2008;Castillo-Urquiza et al, 2008;Barbosa et al, 2009;Silva et al, 2011;Silva et al, 2012;Tavares et al, 2012;Barreto et al, 2013). There is evidence that some of these begomoviruses from noncultivated hosts can be transmitted to cultivated species by the insect vector and by grafting (Arnaud et al, 2007;Castillo-Urquiza et al, 2007;Cotrim et al, 2007;Silva et al, 2010;Barreto et al, 2013;Rocha et al, 2013;Ramos-Sobrinho et al, 2014), highlighting the need to investigate these plants as reservoirs of viral diversity and as a source of new viruses which may cause diseases in crops.…”

“…Urquiza et al, 2008;Tavares et al, 2012).This hypothesis is reinforced by the detection of Sida micranta mosaic virus, SiMoV and Tomato mild mosaic virus occurring in both tomato plants and Sida spp. in field conditions (Castillo-Urquiza…”

“…In the Bayesian phylogenetic tree, (Tavares et al, 2012;Wyant et al, 2012) (Figure 2). These results agree with those found in pairwise comparison analysis, in which the BR-Car1-12A isolate has a higher identity percentage with the SiMoAV species.…”

“…In Brazil, EuYMV has been reported to cause mosaic disease in Euphorbia heterophylla since the 1950s [11] in addition to being found naturally infecting Macroptilium atropurpureum, Sida santaremensis, Crotalaria juncea and Solanum lycopersicum [4,12,13]. To date, EuYMV is the only begomovirus infecting euphorbiaceous hosts in Brazil that has been completely characterized [8].…”
