Functional polyethersulfone particles for the removal of bilirubin

Abstract: In this study, polyethersulfone/poly (glycidyl methacrylate) particles are prepared via in situ cross-linked polymerization coupled with a phase inversion technique. The surfaces of these particles are then further modified by grafting amino groups using tetraethylenepentamine, dethylenetriamine, ethylenediamine, or 1,6-hexanediamine for the removal of bilirubin. The particles are characterized by Flourier transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. Batch adso… Show more

“…Related linear relationships were proposed recently [38]: H V ¼ 0.1475G and H V ¼ 0.0607Y. Our numerical estimations reveal that the examined 122 phases will exhibit moderate hardness (of about 9e14 GPa), which is comparable with H V for their nearest 1111-like analogs: ZrCuSiAs, HfCuSiAs, ZrCuGeAs, and HfCuGeAs [25].…”

“…21d). Bilirubin, one of the breakdown products of red blood cell degradation, is a typical toxin in the blood, and the effective clearance of bilirubin is important for the detoxification of blood 59 . Compared with existing bilirubin adsorbents, this biocompatible membrane is advantageous for bilirubin removal due to its short diffusion path, low pressure drop and simple scaled-up process.…”

“…31 Binding capacities reported for polysulfone ester anion exchanging nanoparticles were ~ 5-10 times lower in comparable conditions, despite requiring binding times well above 60 minutes (see also ESI, Table S2). 32 As a second clinically relevant case, we investigated the removal of heparin. The need to anticoagulate the blood (or plasma) bears a high risk for haemorrhagic complications.…”
