Functional Performance of Chitosan/Carbopol 974P NF Matrices in Captopril Tablets

Abstract: Chitosan and Carbopol have been used to form a complex through an electrostatic interaction between the protonated amine (NH3+) group of chitosan and the carboxylate (COO−) group of Carbopol. In situ polyelectrolyte complexes formations based on the physical mixture of chitosan and sodium alginate were found and could be used as an oral controlled release matrix. The aim of this work is the assessment of a possible interaction between the particles of chitosan and Carbopol 974P NF that could modify their techn… Show more

“…Therefore, if we need to release drugs directed to macrophages, we must load them within NPs_SDS, while if we would like to avoid this uptake, it is necessary to consider NPs_CC. At pH = 5, AC6 network is neutral [40], and so NPs are not able to escape due to their diameter, which is bigger with respect to the mean mesh size of AC6 hydrogel (data on AC structural parameters in Supplementary Table S2).…”

“…It is evident here that the use of HPMC, whether alone or in combination with Carbopol, significantly reduces its compressibility. The compressive strength of granules into tablets has indeed been reported to increase with the use of Carbopol (11). Carbopol itself is commonly employed in direct compression tablets (12).…”

“…This is the measurement of the potential difference between the electrodes placed in the examined solution and the reference solution or between the glass electrode and the reference electrode (calomel, silver), both found in the test formulation [ 85 ]. Chitosan is a pH dependent cationic polymer which remains dissolved in aqueous solution up to a pH of 6.2 [ 86 ]. When β-glycerophosphate, a weak base, is added, chitosan remains in solution at neutral pH and at room temperature.…”
