Functional outcome in contemporary children and young adults with tetralogy of Fallot after repair

Abstract: Contemporary children, adolescents and young adults with ToF still have functional limitations. How impaired HRPF and limited exercise capacity interact and how they can be modified needs to be evaluated in further intervention studies.

“…5,6 Exercise capacity is mostly determined by the maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET) parameter peak oxygen consumption (VO 2peak ) and it is decreased and deteriorates over time in even asymptomatic Fontan patients. 1,3,4,[7][8][9] However, it requires a maximal effort for its correct interpretation, which is often difficult in patients after TCPC. Therefore, submaximal exercise parameters such as the OUES have been developed but it has only been used in a small number of studies with young Fontan patients.…”

“…Upper body flexibility was tested by shoulder stretch task and lower body flexibility by the sit and reach test. For trunk extensor strength and flexibility, the trunk lift (distance chin to the ground after lifting the upper body out of the prone position) was applied for two tries (17, 18). Detailed insights in the testing procedure can be accesses from the online supplement of our previous study in TCPC patients (18).…”
