Full-Stokes imaging polarimeter using an array of elliptical polarizer

Abstract: In this paper, a full-Stokes imaging polarimeter operating at 580 nm using an array of elliptical polarizers is presented. The division-of-focal-plane polarimeter utilizes a set of four optimized measurements which represent a regular tetrahedron inscribed in the Poincaré sphere. Results from the device fabrication, instrument calibration and characterization are presented. The performance of the optimized full Stokes polarimeter, as defined by size of the standard deviation of the degree of circular polarizat… Show more

“…It is well-known that 4 n = modulation states is the least number to demodulate the incident Stokes vector. Division-of-aperture and division-of-focal-plane snapshot imaging polarimeters usually employ four modulation states to achieve maximum spatial resolution on a single array detector [46][47][48][49][50]. For the optimization metrics CN, EWV and PME, there is an optimal retarder and rotator combination as pointed in reference [25,[38][39][40][41].…”

“…The solid body that is spanned by these four optimal polarization measurements is a tetrahedron, and this construction is widely used with many different implementations. 43,49,50 In general, any modulation cf. an equilateral polygon or Platonic solid inside the Poincaré sphere is optimal with respect to noise propagation to the (fractional) Stokes parameters.…”

“…The use of liquid crystal polymers and dichroic dyes has allowed a full Stokes polarimeter [10], [49]. These sensors are capable of capturing polarization information at video frame rates, and their compact realization has allowed them to pertain to remote-sensing applications, such as underwater imaging [21].…”
