Dust is an environmental and health hazard. In this study, a new technology for dust suppressant is introduced using soybean urease with an optimal cementing solution. Calcium carbonate is produced by soybean urease and cementing solution, which bonds the soil particles towards a dust suppressant. A laboratory wind tunnel test is carried out to examine its effectiveness and discover possible optimization solutions. Several factors, including soybean meal concentration, cementing solution concentration, and volume of solution per unit area, are examined to quantify their influences on soil transport mass, evaporation ratio, evaporation rate, surface strength, water retention ratio, and infiltration rate of soil treated by different dust suppressants. Field tests are conducted to explore the performance of this method in the natural environment. The results show that compared with other dust suppressants, the optimized soybean urease has the smallest evaporation rate, a moderate infiltration rate, the largest water retention ratio and surface strength. The indexes of soybean urease for dust suppressant are found to be better than traditional materials. In the natural environment, soybean urease has a stronger anti-disturbance ability. This study concludes that soybean urease dust suppressant has great application potential as a cheap and green method.

Sustainable Cement-Free Soil Stabilization via a Mussel Mimicry, Water-Resistant Hydrogel

Employing hydrogels as a substitute for cement in soil stabilization is believed to have great environmental benefits. However, current hydrogel soil stabilizers cannot function properly in wet conditions due to swelling-induced structural deformation and mechanical weakening, which significantly limits their applications. To overcome current technical limitations and achieve sustainable cement-free soil stabilization, we developed a water-resistant hydrogel soil stabilizer that worked under both dry and wet conditions inspired by the mussel byssal. Carefully formulated precursors containing methacrylic acid and acrylamide were poured into soils and cured via in-site polymerization. The synergic effect of intermolecular hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic interactions led to the formation of heterogeneous mussel mimicry microstructures that possessed superior toughness (up to 2.1 MJ/m3) and ultra-low swelling ratios. Soils strengthened with such hydrogels maintained great strength (up to 2.9 MPa) in both air and water, which had never been achieved before. The intrinsic water affinity of hydrogels also ensured a decent permeability and retention ability of water, which was critical to the ecosystems. In conclusion, a tough, water-resistant, and multi-functional mussel mimicry hydrogel has been devised. It holds great promise as the next-generation cement-free, ecofriendly, and sustainable soil stabilizers.

Fugitive dust particles are important contributors to urban ambient particulate matter (PM), while their emissions have been ignored or greatly underestimated in previous studies, leading to the underestimation of PM concentrations and health impacts. Thus, studying the morphology of fugitive dust, taking appropriate dust-suppression measures, and evaluating dust-suppression effects are crucial to the prevention and control of fugitive dust. In this study, we investigated the morphology and composition of dust particles from different dust sources, including bare land, stock dump, construction, and road dust. Afterwards, different dust-suppression measures including fence interception nets, bare ground mesh nets, and road dust-suppressants were undertaken to simulate and analyze their dust-suppression effects. Finally, the height concentration profiling method was used to comprehensively evaluate the on-site dust-suppression effect, which can not only accurately evaluate the dust-suppression effect, but also predict the dust-suppression ability in a wide range. Gaining insights into the morphology and composition of dust from representative sources is an important step forward to prevent and control fugitive dust, and selecting an appropriate dust-suppression effect evaluation method will provide a beneficial guide for effectively controlling PM pollution in the future.
