In the planning and management of the interim storage of spent nuclear fuel, the technical and economic parameters that are involved have a significant role in increasing the efficiency of the storage system. Optimal parameters will reduce the total economic costs for countries embarking on nuclear energy, such as the UAE. This study evaluated the design performance and economic feasibility of various structures and schedules, to determine an optimal combination of parameters for the management of spent nuclear fuel. With the introduction of various storage technology arrangements and expected costs per unit for the storage system design, we evaluated eight major scenarios, each with a cost analysis based on technological and economic issues. We executed a number of calculations based on the use of these storage technologies, and considered their investment costs. These calculations, which were aligned with the net present value approach and conducted using MS Project and MATLAB software programs, considered the capacities of the spent fuel pools and the amount of spent nuclear fuel (SNF) that will be transferred to dry storage facilities. As soon as they sufficiently cool, the spent nuclear fuel is to be stored in a pool storage facility. The results show that applying a centralized dry storage (CDS) system strategy is not an economically feasible solution, compared with using a permanent disposal facility (PDF) (unless the variable investment cost is reduced or changed). The optimal strategy involves operating a spent fuel pool island (SFPI) storage after the first 20 years of the start of the permanent shutdown of the reactor. After 20 years, the spent fuel is then transferred to a PDF. This strategy also results in a 20.9% to 26.1% reduction in the total cost compared with those of the other strategies. The total cost of the proposed strategy is approximately 4,307 million USD. The duration of the fuel storage and the investment cost, particularly the variable investment cost, directly affect the choice of facility storage.

Optimization of nuclear fuel cycles is essential for experts and policy makers for studying and analyzing the future of the nuclear energy. In the case of advanced electronuclear transition scenarios, multiple parameters with a complex dependence have to be fine-tuned in order to achieve a set of predefined objectives. However, in the presence of uncertainties the solutions obtained in this way may not be stable since small perturbations could break the delicate balance between different parts of the scenario. In this work, the optimization of an uncertainty European-based sustainable transition scenario has been studied. This scenario, which has been analyzed with the TR_EVOL nuclear fuel cycle simulator system, is aimed at reducing the transuranic inventory masses while keeping the fuel cycle costs. To that end, an extension of the DEMO evolutionary multiobjective algorithm has been implemented within TR_EVOL for allowing the inclusion of constraints and uncertainties with a methodology that can be used by any fuel cycle simulator. Results show the importance of coupling optimization and uncertainty analyses due to the suboptimal and unstable solutions that can be obtained if not considered jointly. In addition, the uncertainties shrink the decision space. It was found that in their presence the transuranic mass can be reduced and stabilized by a factor ranging between 65% and 71% with an increase of the cost of 16% and 18.5% after 300 years of operation by using advanced systems when compared with an open fuel cycle strategy.

In order to study the transient characteristics of a nuclear reactor coolant pump in coastdown process under power failure condition, a transient test device for the nuclear reactor coolant pump is set up. This study investigates the effects of the rotor of the nuclear reactor coolant pump and the circuit characteristics on the nuclear reactor coolant pump during the coast-down process by changing the rotary inertia of the flywheel and the resistance of the pipe system. The results show that the greater the moment of inertia is, the more slowly rotational speed, flow, and lift get down in the same coast-down period. The change in the pipe resistance has little effect on the rate of decline in the coast-down process, but it has a great influence on the descent speed of the flow rate and lift. When the pipe resistance is small, the corresponding flow rate decreases faster, but it is slower for the corresponding lift. The results are of great significance in controlling the stability and reliability of the nuclear reactor coolant pump in the coast-down process.
