This paper aims to study the dielectric properties and carbothermic reduction of zinc oxide (zincite, ZnO) and zinc ferrite (franklinite, ZnFe2O4) by microwave heating. To achieve this aim, the dielectric properties were measured with an open-ended coaxial method to understand the behaviour of the samples under microwave irradiation. The effects of microwave power, duration time and sample mass on the heating rate, and the effects of the stoichiometric amount of graphite on the reduction of ZnO and decomposition of ZnFe2O4 were investigated. The results show that ZnFe2O4 has significantly higher dielectric properties compared to ZnO. Generally, for both samples, the dielectric values at room temperature were quite low, indicating that both ZnO and ZnFe2O4 are poor microwave absorbers. It was found that the temperatures have a more significant effect on the imaginary permittivities than on the real permittivities. The heating rate showed that the sample temperature increased with increase in microwave power and sample mass. Using 700 W of microwave power and two times the stoichiometric amount of graphite, almost complete reduction of ZnO was achieved in 12 min, while ZnFe2O4 completely decomposed to zincite and wustite in 3 min.

Magnetic zinc ferrite (ZnFe2O4) nanopowders were synthesized using the sol–gel autocombustion method. X‐ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) measurements demonstrated that thermal decomposition of the 1‐mm‐thick xerogel layers in air formed monophasic spinel ferrite nanopowders with a particle size less than 30 nm. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) showed that the obtained reaction product contained antisite defects, with zinc ions occurring at the octahedral sites of the spinel structure. The concentration of antisite defects or inversion degree decreased when the relatively low annealing temperature was increased from 150 to 500 °C. Overall, the obtained ZnFe2O4, which is usually antiferromagnetic (exhibits no magnetic moment), demonstrated high saturation magnetization (60.7 emu g−1), and coercive force (56 Oe). This was due to the presence of the antisite defects in the structure.

Summary: This study aims at the effect of Zinc ferrite nanoparticles of particle size (14 AE 2) nm prepared by sol-gel technique on chlorella pyrenoidosa at two different concentrations (1.0 mM and 2.0 mM). The structural characterizations of the prepared sample (ZnFe 2 O 4 ) were carried out by XRD, TEM, and XRF. XRD analysis revealed single phased cubic spinel structure having space group Fd3m. XRF analysis confirmed the purity of the sample. The negative effect of ZnFe 2 O 4 on chlorella pyrenoidosa was manifested by the progressive depletion of cell count. It was found that the algal growth was inhibited by 47% even at a low concentration of 2 mM indicating that zinc ferrite nanoparticles are promising agent for the control of unwanted algal growth. To the best of our knowledge, the effect of ferrite nanoparticles on algae has not been reported elsewhere.
