FTIR On-line Monitoring of Biodiesel Transesterification

Abstract: An on-line biodiesel transesterification monitoring system was developed using a mid-FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) spectrometer equipped with a temperature controlled transmission flow cell. A variety of spectral regions were assessed to monitor functional group changes during the transesterification process of Canola oil. The resulting dynamic reaction curves generated were used to gauge reaction progress as well as the final product parameters and compared to its corresponding GC profile. The transesteri… Show more

“…The main characteristic peak for biodiesel occurs at 1245 cm −1 (C-O) and corresponds to the proportion of fatty acid methyl esters [30]. Other peaks diagnostic for biodiesel were identified at positions 1742 cm −1 (C=O) and 1057 cm −1 (C-O) similar to those identified in other studies [5,31]. The spectrum for regular diesel showed some similarities to that of biodiesel, particularly in the 3000-2700 cm −1 region (Figure 8).…”

“…, respectively), and C=O stretch deformation at approximately 1746 cm −1 [28][29][30]. On the FTIR spectrum of BIMO, the product of the transesterification of MO with methanol, a change on the profile of the peaks in the 1000-1400 cm −1 range can be observed, along with the appearance of a typical ester band at 1035 cm −1 (Figure 1) [31,32]. These differences between the FTIR spectra of MO and BIMO suggest that the methanolysis reaction was successful.…”
