From practice to collaborative community in interdisciplinary research contexts

Abstract: This paper contributes to the debate on the dynamics of the development of practices and their relation to the emergence of collaborative communities of practitioners. Our research is situated in a university that was seeking to promote and stimulate interdisciplinary research collaborations through a number of initiatives. We are concerned both with characterizing the practices that make this kind of collaboration possible, and with the emergence of a community that creates and endorses such collaborative pra… Show more

“…Viewed through a CoP lens, these tensions can never be fully resolved but can be generatively managed at the firm-community boundary. Similar to Siedlok et al (2015), we posit that understanding the tensions that underpin firm-community knowledge dynamics can help host firms formulate support initiatives that aid in orchestrating the firm's practices with those of the (user) community, and thus overcome barriers to the creation and capture of value through community-based OI. We offer insights into the processes involved in supporting knowledge collaboration by focusing on the role of boundary spanners and boundary objects in traversing knowledge boundaries in the firm-community context.…”

“…Not surprisingly, the collaborative aspect is a key concern in much of the literature on collaborative research projects (Barnes et al, 2006, Brocke and Lippe, 2015, Davenport et al, 1998, Siedlok et al, 2015, Tripsas et al, 1995. We build our collaborative perspective by outlining collaborative challenges related to five variables (Binder, 2009, Binder, 2007, i.e.…”
