Freely Dissolved Pore Water Concentrations and Sorption Coefficients of PAHs in Spiked, Aged, and Field-Contaminated Soils

Abstract: Freely dissolved aqueous concentrations in the soil pore water represent an important aspect of bioavailability and risk assessment of contaminated soils. In this study, a negligible depletive partitioning based sampling technique was validated and applied to measure free concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in spiked, aged and field-contaminated soils. Detailed kinetic studies were performed to select appropriate equilibration times. Freely dissolved aqueous concentrations in the pore wat… Show more

“…Results are listed in Table 4-11, and Figure 4-4 shows the fit of all data. The partition coefficients of the selected PAHs used in the present study are comparable to those measured by Ter Laak et al 48 with a maximum difference of 0.34 log units and minimum of -0.01 log units. Two fiber-exposure methods were employed in this study.…”

“…The observed log K oc s were compared to the log K oc s predicted from equilibrium partition model based on a correlation with log K ow (log K oc =0.903*1og K ow +0.094) 30 . The results are illustrated in 48,60 . However, the deviations for PCBs were much smaller (within a factor of 10).…”

“…Results are listed in Table 1, and Figure 1 shows the fit of all data. The partition coefficients of the selected PAHs used in the present study are comparable to those measured by Ter Laak et al [19] with a maximum difference of 0.34 log units and minimum of À0.01 log units. Two fiber-exposure methods were employed in the present study.…”

“…The equilibrium partition model overpredicted the porewater concentrations by up to two orders of magnitude, e.g., for BbF, BkF, and BaP in Anacostia River sediment. Similar extensive deviations of PAH porewater concentrations in fieldcontaminated sediments had been observed by many researchers [19,35]. However, the deviations for PCBs were much smaller (within a factor of 10).…”
