Frailty in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease under conservative treatment

Abstract: Objective: to assess the frail level of the elderly with chronic kidney disease under conservative treatment. Methods: this is a cross-sectional and correlational study performed with 35 elderly. The frailty was assessed using the Edmonton Frail Scale instrument. A descriptive analysis and Spearman correlation coefficients were performed. Results: the frailty showed a minimal variation of 1 and maximum of 14, with a mean score 7.71 (±3.10). Women (8.05±3.551) and illiterates (9.57±2.637) showed a higher mean s… Show more

“…The prevalence of complications on this disease increases as the renal function decreases about 50% or more (21) . A study conducted simultaneously, in the same ambulatory and with the same target group of the present study, that evaluated the level of fragility of the elderly with CKD in conservative treatment, verified that in this group the patients presented some degree of fragility, and that a greater fragility is correlated with a greater number of clinical complications (22) . Although in this study, patients were not classified regarding the stage of CKD, the elderly patients attended to in the ambulatory unit present 70% or more of impaired renal function, which characterizes the final stages of the disease.…”

“…With regard to the general characterization of the sample, the findings are similar to the results of national surveys about frailty in elderly living in the community (8) , institutionalized elderly (11) or in outpatient care (4,12) , which indicate average age of 68 years and married status (12) , with low schooling (11) , who did not live alone (8) , who referred diseases (4)(5) , used medications (12) , had suffered falls in the last 12 months and had been hospitalized in the last 12 months (8,12) .…”
