Formation of conidia in a saprophytic strainClaviceps paspali producing simple lysergic acid derivatives

Abstract: A non-mutant saprophytic strain C. paspali which forms conidia both on a solid medium and during submerged fermentation is described. Conidiation proceeded in parallel with culture growth and production of alkaloids. The effect of composition of culture media on the intensity of conidiation is described.

“…Submerged fermentation of these strains has been studied by many authors. The maximum production of LAHs is attained around fermentation day 12 and then their concentration declines (Mary et al 1965;l~i~icovfi et al 1982;Pertot et al 1984;Gaberc-Porekar et al 1987;Rylko et al 1988). The nature of this phenomenon has not yet been studied in more detail.…”

“…A mechanism of formation of these compounds is proposed. The C-8 configuration of 8-hydroxyergotamine was solved by comparison with nmr spectra of 1 and 2.Submerged fermentation of various strains of Claviceps paspali Stevens et Hall is a long-studied subject (1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6). Only a few authors (1,2,6) have mentioned a decline in the alkaloid content in the later production phase.…”
