Formation and transport of oxidized reactive nitrogen, ozone, and secondary organic aerosol in Tokyo

Abstract: [1] Measurements of the major reactive nitrogen species (NO y ) i (NO x , peroxyacyl nitrates, HNO 3 , and particulate nitrate (NO 3 À )), total reactive nitrogen (NO y ), volatile organic compounds, OH and HO 2 , and organic aerosol were made near the urban center of Tokyo in different seasons of [2003][2004] to study the processes involving oxidized forms of reactive nitrogen and O 3 . Generally, NO x constituted the dominant fraction of NO y throughout the seasons. The NO x /NO y and HNO 3 /NO y ratios were… Show more

“…6. It is evident that acetaldehyde is the dominant source for PA formation with the contribution of 59.7% among the six carbonyls in Beijing, which was in agreement with the conclusion that acetaldehyde is often the dominant PA radical source over urban areas (Kondo et al, 2008;Roberts et al, 2001). The photolysis of acetone is the second largest contribution to the total PA radical with the production rate of ca.…”

“…The purpose of the simulation in and around Tokyo is to validate the VBS scheme over the region where meteorological fields, emissions, and the concentrations of precursor gaseous species are relatively well known (compared with over the Asian region). We used observed data during the Integrated Measurement Program for Aerosol and oxidant Chemistry in Tokyo (IMPACT) campaign (Takegawa et al, 2006a, b;Kondo et al, 2006Kondo et al, , 2007Kondo et al, , 2008Kondo et al, , 2010. OA mass concentrations observed with an Aerodyne AMS and gaseous species such as O 3 , OH, and VOCs are available for the campaign period.…”

“…Reactive nitrogen-containing compounds (NO y ) are involved in many important chemical processes in the atmosphere, including aerosol and ozone (O 3 ) formation (Kondo et al 2008). Some NO y species are soluble in water, e.g.…”
