This paper examines the relationships between county-level urbanisation, natural amenities and subjective well-being (SWB) in the US. SWB is measured using individual-level data from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) which asks respondents to rate their overall life satisfaction. Using individual-level SWB data allows us to control for several important individual characteristics. The results suggest that urbanisation lowers SWB, with relatively large negative coefficients for residents in dense counties and large metropolitan areas. Natural amenities also affect SWB, with warmer winters having a significant positive relationship with self-reported life-satisfaction. Implications for researchers and policymakers are discussed.

En los últimos años, los partidos políticos se han lanzado a por el voto de la llamada España vacía. Una parte de España, donde la despoblación reciente ha sido acusada, reparte como mínimo 79 escaños en el Congreso de los Diputados y se ha convertido en un gran activo electoral. ¿Pero cuál es la relación entre la despoblación y el voto? ¿La pérdida de población ha conllevado que algunos partidos hayan ganado o perdido votos? ¿O la abstención ha subido/bajado? Utilizando una nueva base de datos que tiene en cuenta los patrones de voto y las dinámicas de despoblación entre 2008 y 2019, este artículo pretende contribuir a la literatura existente analizando ambos fenómenos y dando respuesta a una relación que todavía no conocemos. Para ello utilizamos las cinco comunidades autónomas que según Sergio del Molino (2016) integran la España vacía. Los análisis estadísticos indican que la despoblación está relacionada con un aumento significativo de la movilización y del voto a partidos conservadores, un efecto fundamentalmente debido a cambios composicionales demográficos, esto es, a que los jóvenes, más de izquierdas de media, son los más propensos a irse a vivir a zonas urbanas.

Assessing the Influence of Strategic Resources on the Quality of Life in Spanish Cities

Quality of life (QoL) is both a main concern of good local governance and an indicator of city performance. A key question to answer is that of what resources have the potential to enhance city performance, thus providing added value to stakeholders. By adopting a resource-based view (RBV), this paper explores the relationships between a group of strategic resources (e-government, transparency, and reputation) and QoL in a sample of 78 Spanish municipalities. Our study makes a contribution by providing an original design of a set of relations among our own selected resources and between them and quality of life. In order to test those relations, we define and create four constructs by using four different data sources and structural equation modeling (SEM). The results show a positive influence of resources on QoL, which is supported by a number of positive direct and indirect interactions among them. This means that municipalities with better strategic resources in local governments exhibit a higher level of quality of life.
