In this study, we evaluated the quality of life (QoL) and associated factors of community health workers (CHWs) in different urban settings as a contributor to the preparedness of Brazilian primary care for future sanitary emergencies. The sample included 1935 CHWs from 4 state capitals and 4 inland municipalities in northeastern Brazil. Information was collected on QoL (WHOQOL-BREF), work routines, sociodemographics, direct and indirect exposure to violence, general self-efficacy, social support (MSPSS), mental health (SRQ-20) and coronavirus anxiety. The data were subjected to multiple linear regression analysis (α = 5%). In the state capitals, the factors associated with loss of QoL were poor mental health, lack of training, uncertainty about occupational biosafety, and lack of adaptation of services to tend to patients diagnosed with COVID-19. Among the inland municipalities, the main factors were coronavirus anxiety, poor mental health, lack of adaptation of services, lack of training, and lack of personal protective equipment (PPE). A high MSPSS (family and friends) score and self-efficacy had positive impacts on QoL in both urban settings. Our results highlight the need for investment in permanent education, PPE, social support, and mental health care for CHWs.

A vacina contra o novo coronavírus é uma alternativa para reduzir os indicadores de mobimortalidade e de hospitalização, concentradas, em especial, nos pacientes da faixa etária acima dos 60 anos. O objetivo do trabalho é analisar o impacto da vacinação contra o SARS-CoV-2 na taxa de internação e de mortalidade de pacientes idosos no período de 2021-2022 no estado de Alagoas, Brasil. O estudo é de caráter quantitativo, observacional, transversal e retrospectivo. Estatisticamente, foram realizadas análises descritivas. As variáveis utilizadas foram: casos, óbitos, hospitalizações e vacinação de pacientes com 60 anos ou mais. Os dados utilizados são de caráter público e obtidos em repositórios governamentais. Alagoas acumula, 30.071 casos confirmados e 4.628 óbitos entre idosos por COVID-19. Quanto à vacinação, o estado aplicou 5.927.331 doses, sendo os idosos responsáveis por 33,84% com três doses ou mais. É possível observar uma redução na taxa de novos casos confirmados, internação e óbitos por COVID-19 quando correlacionada à imunização. Observa-se que Alagoas reduziu a incidência de novos casos, hospitalização e óbitos por COVID-19 à medida que avançou a campanha de vacinação. Os achados sugerem uma contribuição da imunização no curso da doença, em especial, no controle de casos graves e de mortalidade.

Brazilian entrepreneurs’ tax morale from an institutional perspective: evidence from the telecommunications sector

Purpose This research aims to describe the factors influencing the tax morale of entrepreneurs in the Brazilian telecommunications industry. Design/methodology/approach The authors surveyed a sample of 167 entrepreneurs from the sector using structured online self-assessment questionnaires analyzed quantitatively through the partial least squares structural equation modeling technique. Findings The results indicate that risk of detection, severity of punishments and tax justice represent determining factors for the tax morale of entrepreneurs, though their age also contributes to explaining tax behavior, proving to be a significant control variable. These findings presuppose a predominance of institutional pressures from the regulatory and normative pillars on this group, in contrast to evidence from previous studies dealing with tax morale among ordinary citizens. Originality/value The theoretical implications are fourfold. The authors address a gap in the study of tax morale at the organizational level, integrate the entrepreneurship literature in specific sectors with tax policies through neo-institutional theory, support changes in the tax legislation of an emerging economy with widespread biases of corruption and add more diversity to the perceived legitimacy of its current tax system. Practical recommendations include the creation of public policies particularly targeted at younger entrepreneurs predominant in this sector to build a regulatory framework that incorporates both tax justice and severity of punishments to foster trust between taxpayers and tax authorities; using the institutional legitimacy mechanism to elicit a more isonomic performance of the tax authorities; and reevaluating the risk of detection strategies.
