Foliar Applications of Salicylic Acid on Boosting Salt Stress Tolerance in Sour Passion Fruit in Two Cropping Cycles

Abstract: Brazil stands out as the largest producer of sour passion fruit; however, the water available for irrigation is mostly saline, which can limit its cultivation. This study was carried out with the objective of evaluating the effects of salicylic acid in the induction of tolerance in sour passion fruit to salt stress. The assay was conducted in a protected environment, using a completely randomized design in a split-plot scheme, with the levels of electrical conductivity of the irrigation water (0.8, 1.6, 2.4, 3… Show more

“…As observed in Figure 5, in general, irrigation with moderately saline water reduces the fluorescence of sour passion fruit (Fo, Fm, and Fv), mainly in grafted plants. Salt stress reduces chlorophyll fluorescence, compromising energy transfer to photosystem II reaction centers [12,14,17,42]. In sour passion fruit, moderately saline water (4.5 dS m −1 ) has been shown to reduce the quantum yield, negatively affecting the photosynthetic activity of the crop [7].…”

“…As verified in the present study, the beneficial effect of salicylic acid on early dwarf cashew plants depended on the applied concentration. In addition to concentration, the effect of salicylic acid is related to the stage of crop development, method, and frequency of application [15,47,48].…”

“…Sims) is a crop highly sensitive to salt stress, with a critical threshold for irrigation water salinity set at 1.3 dS m -1 (Galvão Sobrinho et al, 2023). Brazil, being the world's leading producer and consumer of passion fruit, recorded a production of 697,859 t in 2022, cultivated across 45,602 ha, making an average yield of 15,303 t ha -1 .…”
