Abstract: Ultra-small gold nanoclusters (Au NCs) are highly promising materials for tumor imaging and therapy because of their low toxicity, intrinsic fluorescence, and the availability of multifunctional groups for covalent linkage of diverse bioactive molecules. Au NCs stabilized by bovine serum albumin (BSA) were prepared via an improved "green" synthetic routine. To ameliorate the selective affinity of Au NCs for high folate receptor (FR) expressing tumors, folic acid (FA) was immobilized on the surface of Au NCs. S… Show more

“…We found that relative mRNA expressions of FR in MGC-803 were statistically higher than those in GES-1 cells (10±3.10 vs 1±0.27, P=0.011; Figure S3), meaning that MGC-803 cells preferred to bind FA or Au-BSA-DOX-FA nanocomposites. 16 …”

“…The nanoprobe displayed low toxicity against tumor cells in vivo and in vitro, a bright fluorescence signal and an outstanding tumor targeting ability due to folate receptor (FR)-mediated uptake. 16 In another research, Murawala et al synthesized Au NPs capped with BSA molecules in situ. The Au-BSA NPs had superior stability against different mediums and were used as an effective anticancer drug carrier to load methotrexate into MCF-7 breast cancer cells as a chemotherapy treatment.…”

“…For the purpose of achieving targeted cell imaging, fluorescent AuNCs can be modified with recognition elements. For example, widely studied cancer cell target molecules including herceptin and folic acid have been used to conjugate BASAuNCs for tumor-targeted bioimaging [135,136].…”

“…Gold nanomaterials of sizes less than 10 nm, providing a variety of platforms for the interaction of nanoparticles with biomolecules, 7 have been used in various fields either for diagnostic purposes, including imaging, 8,9 the turning on and off of the near-infrared fluorescent bioimaging of cells, 10 biological labeling, 11 electrochemical genosensors for DNA, 12 and for cancer therapy as multifunctional nanomedicines with noninvasive in vivo near-infrared fluorescence capability. 13 Low toxicity and the ultrafine size of gold nanomaterials have captivated the interest of researchers and are indicated as potential candidates for passage through the BBB.…”
