“…Indeed, methylfolate itself may have a direct effect on blood pressure via a mechanism independent of transsulphuration metabolites such as Hcy. It has been suggested that reduced folates may interact synergistically with tetrahydrobiopterin metabolism in the synthesis of NO by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (Hayden and Tyagi 2004;Moat et al 2004;Stroes et al 2000;Hyndman et al 2002;Doshi et al 2003) and as such help to maintain vascular wall elasticity. Taken collectively, the dietary, metabolite and genetic findings suggest a clear influence of H 2 S-related transsulphuration parameters on blood pressure and warrant further studies to better characterise this important new area of clinical significance.…”

“…32,33 Folic acid and its metabolites are also superoxide radical scavengers. 34,35 The Role of PSMA in Vasculogenesis Cellular folate gradients across cell membranes are maintained by the g-glutamylated form, polyglutamyl folate, which accumulates intracellularly, and must be deconjugated by pteroylpoly-g-glutamate hydrolase, also called folate hydrolase, into a monoglutamylated form to participate in metabolic reactions. 36 PSMA has folate hydrolase activity.…”

“…Folate deficiency is prevalent in underdeveloped countries, and even in the Western world, subtle deficiency is a public health problem most notable in its association with the prevention of neural tube defects (NTDs) (Czeizel and Dudas, 1992;Eichholzer et al, 2006). Folates also attract considerable interest as protective vitamins against pregnancy complications, certain types of cancer (Kim, 1999), cardiovascular disease (Moat et al, 2004) and some neuropsychiatric conditions (Selhub et al, 2000;Seshadri et al, 2002). Mandatory fortification of staple foods with folic acid (PteGlu) was introduced, for example, in the US, Canada and Chile and resulted in a significantly decreased prevalence of NTDs plus a reduction of plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels in the US population (Honein et al, 2001).…”
