A diffusion scrubber (DS) is an excellent tool for gas analysis, and there are many types of DS devices, varying both in structure and construction. In this paper, recent work on atmospheric trace gas measurements by means of DS devices are reviewed. Theoretical considerations on representative DSs are summarized first. Then, the characteristics of the key material, a gas-diffusion membrane, are discussed, and recent improvements and novel scrubbers for highly effective collection are outlined. A chromatograph is a suitable tool for the multi-gas analysis of collected species. On the other hand, solid-state fluorescence/absorbance detectors have been developed for the continuous measurement of target gases. The methods based on DS collection and subsequent detection have high sensitivities, and the detection limits can be in the low-pptv levels. Accordingly, they are capable of measuring background levels, and detecting very low levels of contaminants in a cleanroom. Miniaturized advanced DS units, perhaps the next generation of DS devices, are introduced at the end of this review. DS systems have contributed significantly to our knowledge of the atmospheric dynamics and atmospheric chemistry.

We propose the use of lab-on-a-chip technology for measuring gaseous chemical pollutants, and describe the development of a microchip for the detection of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) in air. A microchip fabricated from quartz glass has been developed for handling the following three functions, gas absorption, chemical reaction and fluorescence detection. Channels constructed in the microchip were covered with porous glass plates, allowing nitrogen dioxide to penetrate into the triethanolamine (TEA) flowing within the microchannel beneath. The nitrogen dioxide was then mixed with TEA and reacted with a suitable fluorescence reagent in the chemical reaction chamber in the microchip. The reacted solution was then allowed to flow into the fluorescence detection area to be excited by an ultraviolet light-emitting diode (UV-LED), and the fluorescence was detected using a photomultiplier tube (PMT). The reaction time, reagent concentration, pH, flow rate and other measurement conditions were optimised for analysis of nitrogen dioxide in air. Preliminary studies with standardized test solutions revealed quantitative measurements of nitrite ion (NO2-), which corresponded to atmospheric nitrogen dioxide in the range of 10-80 ppbv.

A Simple Flow Injection Spectrophotometric Determination of Nitrite Based on Its Reaction with Thiourea

A simple flow injection spectrophotometric method for the determination of nitrite is described. Nitrite injected into the flow system reacts with thiourea in acidic medium and the generated thiocyanate ion reacts with Fe(III) in the reagent solution to produce a highly colored product. The influences of chemical and physical parameters including reagent concentrations, sample volume injected, flow rates of the carrier and reagent solutions, reaction coil length and reaction temperature, were studied and optimum values of these parameters were established. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration curve for nitrite was linear over the concentration range 0.36 -90 µg ml -1 without preconcentration and over the range 3.8 -500 ng ml -1 with a simple online preconcentration step using an anion exchange column. The corresponding detection limits were 0.36 µg ml -1 and 3.8 ng ml -1 , respectively. Up to 25 samples can be analyzed per hour, with an average relative standard deviation of ≤ 1.2%. Interferences by various foreign ions were studied and the method was applied to the determination of nitrite in water and spiked water samples.
