“…Tricothecenes are known to induce apoptosis in various cells, notably in leukocytes such as macrophages [35], monocytes [36], B-cells, T-cells, IgA+ cells [37], and erythroleukemia cell line K562 [38]. The current study demonstrates that DON also induces apoptosis in PMNs.…”

“…Moreover, pigs fed with diets spontaneously contaminated by DON show much more severe case histories and lesions compared to pigs exposed to the same doses of pure mycotoxin. The low doses of pure DON administered to pigs bred under controlled experimental conditions did not have any evident influence on the immune system; this is testified by the absence of significant differences of the lymphocyte subsets and by the absence of lesions in the parenchymatous and lymphoid organs (Pestka et al 1994;Rotter et al 1996;Islam et al 2002;Cantoni et al 2007). The mycotoxin, at the experimental dosage used in the study, did not cause any topical lesions on the mucosa of the higher digestive areas (oral cavity and oesophagus) or on the gastric cavity.…”

“…Trichothecenes have both effects of enhancement or impairment of mitogen-induced lymphocyte proliferation, depending on the dose of exposure, what has been demonstrated in in vitro and ex-vivo studies [111]. In vitro DON exposure induced apoptosis in murine T cells, B cells, and IgA+ cells isolated from spleen, Peyer's patches, and thymus [113]. This induction of apoptosis was dependent on lymphocyte subset, tissue source, and glucocorticoid induction [110].…”
