Th e ready availability of water resources distinguishes the humid forest of Chapada do Araripe, Ceará State, Brazil, from the semiarid vegetation around it. Th e regional climate demonstrates a marked seasonality of rainfall that aff ects the ecological strategies of the species found there. We studied the bryophytes of the humid forest of Chapada do Araripe, analyzing their diversity, geographic distributions, and ecological and reproductive aspects. Bryophytes were collected from diff erent substrates using the random-walk method. We gathered information concerning the geographic distribution, functional groups (life forms, light tolerance guilds, and habits) and reproductive aspects of each taxon. We found 76 bryophyte species, predominantly mosses (45 species). Ten new occurrences were recorded for Ceará State, including a new taxon for northeastern Brazil. Most species are widely distributed in that country. Desiccation tolerant (turf) and intermediate (mat and weft) life forms predominated, as well as generalist species in terms of their light requirements. Sixty eight percent of the species demonstrated substrate preferences. Monoicous (67 %) sexual systems predominated over dioicous. Th e species displayed functional groups and reproductive aspects tolerant to adverse conditions that maximized the use of available resources and allowed their persistence under the seasonal conditions of the forest.

Serra do Cipó has attracted the interest of many researchers over the years because of its unique characteristics, particularly the fact that the site represents the transition between Cerrado and Atlantic Forest. The study area of Serra do Cipó is located along a gallery forest "córrego Três Pontinhas, " at 19°16'00" S and 43°32'49" W and an altitude of 1,188 m. The objective of this study was to survey the Division Bryophyta in a gallery forest within the National Park of Serra do Cipo, Minas Gerais. Collections were made during the months of November 2009 and July 2011. We found 15 families, 26 genera, 43 species, and 4 varieties of mosses. The families with the largest number of species were Leucobryaceae (10), Sematophyllaceae (9), and Calymperaceae (6). Other families included Fissidentaceae (3), Bryaceae, Pylaisiadelphaceae, Pottiaceae, and Orthotrichaceae (2 spp. each); Brachytheciaceae, Cryphaeaceae, Fabroniaceae, Helicophyllaceae, Hypnaceae, Polytrichaceae, and Sphagnaceae had only 1 sp. each. Three new records for the state of Minas Gerais were found: Acroporium caespitosum, A. longirostre, and Colobodontium vulpinum.

-(Bryophytes in Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar, Núcleo Santa Virgínia, São Paulo State, Brazil). The Núcleo Santa Virgínia is one of the administrative centers of the extensive Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar that was created in order to protect the rich São Paulo State Atlantic Forest biodiversity. This phytogeographical domain is the richest in bryophyte species and endemic species of the country. Altogether, we found 386 bryophyte species (196 liverworts, 188 mosses, and two hornworts); 32 (8%) are Brazilian endemic species; 24 new records are registered for São Paulo State and four new records for Atlantic Forest (Cheilolejeunea beyrichii (Lindenb.) Reiner, Microlejeunea acutifolia Steph, Lepidopilum pallidonitens (Müll. Hal.) Paris, and Bryum leptocladon Sull). The liverwort family Lejeuneaceae was the richest with 90 species found in the area, while Pilotrichaceae showed greater richness for mosses, with 20 species. Most species reveal a moderate distribution for the country and are neotropical. O Núcleo Santa Virgínia é um dos centros administrativos do extenso Parque Estadual da Serra do Mar que foi criado para proteger a rica biodiversidade da Mata Atlântica do Estado de São Paulo. Esse domínio fitogeográfico possui a maior riqueza e endemismo de espécies de briófitas do país. Foram encontradas 386 espécies de briófitas (196 hepáticas, 188 musgos e dois antóceros), 32 (8%) espécies endêmicas brasileiras, 24 novos registros para o Estado de São Paulo e quatro novas ocorrências para a Mata Atlântica (Cheilolejeunea beyrichii (Lindenb.) Reiner, Microlejeunea acutifolia Steph, Lepidopilum pallidonitens (Müll. Hal.) Paris e Bryum leptocladon Sull.). A família de hepáticas Lejeuneaceae foi a mais rica, com 90 espécies, enquanto Pilotrichaceae apresentou maior riqueza para os musgos, com 20 espécies. A maioria das espécies encontradas apresenta uma distribuição moderada para o país e são neotropicais.
